Music is one big business that has turned a lot of Nigerian youths into multi-millionaires, equipping them with the resources to live their dreams. In Nigeria, new artistes are being made everyday, and the record labels’ impact on the entertainment industry is telling and cannot be ignored.
There have been many record labels in Nigeria in the past. Some have crashed, while some remain ofloat. Here are top three (3) record labels who are in big business in Nigeria today.
(1) MAVIN RECORDS
Mavin is a revamped Nigeria-based record label, founded by the legendary producer, Don Jazzy, in 2012. The label came after the split of Mo’Hits in 2011, Don Jazzy went on to found Mavin Records, also known as Supreme Mavin Dynasty.
Tiwa Savage is one of the popular stars on Mavin. She is referred to as the First Lady of Mavin. Other artistes include Dr. Sid, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Di’Ja, D Prince, DNA Twins, Jonny Drille.
Sidney Onoriode Esiri popularly known as Dr. Sid is a song writer and singer signed on Mavin. He has dropped several singles, music videos and has won several awards.
Ayoleyi Hanniel Solomon, commonly known by his stage name Reekado is signed on Mavin Records. Reey has an album and several singles. He won the next rated award at the Headies 2015 and a few other awards.
Bello is a singer and song writer currently signed on Mavin Records. He is best known for his hit single: “Godwin”, a semi-gospel -Pop song, which became a national anthem and topped many music charts across Nigeria.
Hadiza Blell better known by her stage name, Di’ja, is a songwriter and singer. She released her first single “Rock Steady”, which was nominated for Best Urban/R&B single at the 2009 Canadian Radio Music Award.
Charles Enebeli better known by his stage name, D’Prince, is an Afro-Pop singer and songwriter, who is signed on Mavin label, a label owned by his elder brother.
John Ighodaro commonly known as Jonny Drille is a folk/alternative singer, songwriter, producer and sound engineer and is currently signed on Mavin Records.
Blair and Clinton popularly known as DNA are identical twin brothers, they competed in Glo X Factor and the Voice Nigeria in 2013 and 2016 respectively. They are currently signed on Mavin Records.
Ladipo Eso commonly known by his stage name, POE is a rapper and recording artiste signed on Mavin Records. Poe was recognised for his flow and technical skills as a rapper.
DJ BIG IV
Nonso Temisan Ajuto is a Nigerian Hip-Hop DJ. He is signed on Mavin Records. DJ Big IV has supported several top- rated acts, including Tiwa Savage on her first American tour. He has released several Mavins mixtape.
(2) DMW (DAVIDO MUSIC WORLDWIDE)
Davido was brought from HKN when Davido decided to step up from mediocrity and become a powerful force to reckon with in the music industry. He decided that it was time he invested in talents, signing Mayorkun first and back to back signed Dremo, Peruzzi, Yonda, Idowest.
Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel popularly known by his stage name, Mayorkun, is a son of a popular Nigerian actress, Toyin Adewale. He is a singer and songwriter signed on DMW, his song Eleko shot him to the limelight.
Aboriomoh Femi Raymond popularly known as Dremo is a songwriter, singer and record producer. Dremo’s music is quite different and unique. His style distinguishes him from other artists. He dropped an album entitled “Codename” three years after being signed on DMW.
Tobechukwu Victor Okoh better known by his stage name, Peruzzi is a recording and performing artiste. He was previously signed on DMW after he released “Your Pocket” and it topped different music charts in Nigeria.
Adeniran Abayomi Adetunji known by his stage name, Yonda, is a singer and songwriter, who is signed on DMW. His song bad girl Riri, in which he featured Mayorkun, brought him to the limelight.
Adekunle Idowu popularly known as Idowest is a Nigerian rapper, who has been signed on three labels in 2 years. His song “Shepeteri” and amazing dance steps called Shakushaku shot him to the limelight and he is currently signed on DMW.
(3) YAHOO BOY NO LAPTOP NATION (YBNL)
YBNL was founded by Olamide in 2012, YBNL has rapidly grown in the last few years to become one of the top record labels in the country. Popular artistes like Adekunle Gold, Lil Kesh, Viktoh were once signed on YBNL. However, they have since left the label. Currently, DJ Enimoney, Temmie Ovwasa, Davolee and Olamide are the acts on YBNL. Young John and Pheelz are the producers at YBNL.
Eniola Olamilekan Adedeji known by his stage name, DJ Enimoney, is the youngest brother of indigenous rapper and YBNL’s boss, Olamide. The “Oya Dab” crooner Enimoney is a pro-disc jockey and also the official DJ to YBNL artistes.
Temmie better known by her nickname, YBNL Princess, is a self-taught guitarist, songwriter singer, drummer and a keyboardist. She became the First Lady to be signed on YBNL, which informed her being called YBNL Princess.
Shokoya Oluwasegunfunmi David known as Davolee is rapper and songwriter. He signed on YBNL and he is known for his viral cover at “PAWDA” a hit single by American artiste and for the sensational hit, “Pepper Dem Gang”, which features Olamide.
Udomboso John Saviours popularly known as Young John the wicked producer is a record producer and audio engineer. He is best known for producing the critically acclaimed single entitled: “Story For The Gods” Off Olamide’s Street OT Album. He is currently signed on YBNL.
Philip Kayode Moses was better known as Pheelz is an audio engineer and record producer, who produced the single by Olamide entitled “Durosoke”, which went on to earn him a nomination in the “Producer Of The Year” category at the Headies.
