Let’s be honest with ourselves, shall we? Halloween is one of the most exciting times of the year. Maybe you are one of the people who moans and groans when the fake ghosts and cotton cobweb decorations start showing up on store shelves and exclaim, “Halloween is not a real holiday! I won’t be decorating my home before Christmas, no way.”
Or maybe you are completely opposite and the second the clock strikes midnight on October 1, you pull all of the previous year’s Halloween costumes out of the closet and start looking at your options.
I am sure there is one thing that we can all agree on – at the end of the day, we all get into the Halloween spirit. If you are looking to spice things up this Halloween, I have some great ideas for you!
How about you trying to decorate something other than the traditional pumpkins? It can get boring to carve the same designs into the same vegetable every October, after all.
If you are up for a challenge, you should definitely decorate a zucchini for Halloween! Zucchini is also part of the squash family like pumpkin and butternut but can be more difficult to carve because they have a different shape.
Because they are so narrow and often small, it can be impossible to hollow them out completely. However, they also have tough skin that is easy to carve fun shapes and faces into. It can be quite a cool look if you partially hollow out the insides and carve an interesting face on the outside.
Like pumpkins, butternut is a type of squash. Squash are fairly easy to clean out because all it takes is a simple scoop of their seeds to prepare your canvas. Also, the skin on squashes tends to be quite tough so it will not get mushy when you press a knife in to make a spooky face.
I bet it has never occurred to you before to decorate a bell pepper. But think about how festive it would look to have multi-colored bell peppers decorating your front porch?
You could carve an angry face into a red pepper, a scared face into a yellow pepper, and a surprised face into the green pepper to add variety. Bell peppers are easy vegetables to carve because it only takes a moment to scoop out their insides and then your canvas is all ready.
Now that you know what you can decorate this Halloween other than pumpkins, I hope that you give one or all of them a try. Get into the festive spirit this Halloween and carve up some colorful bell peppers or take on a challenge and try making a spooky face on a zucchini.
Let’s break with tradition and show everyone that Halloween can be the best time to show off our creativity.
