•Still Very Active At Over 70
If you meet her for the very first time, you won’t believe this beautiful woman is a little over 70. Yes. She is Deaconess Detoun Olubi is in her early 70s, but she does not look it. She has kept her youthful and graceful look intact. Many women call her Iya Ibeta because she has triplets. Some even call her Super Q, the name of her popular Aso-Oke fashion brand that has been in existence for the past 35 years.
Super Q is a unique type of quality and exquisite Aso-Oke that has rocked the fashion scene, since 1984 when Deaconess Detoun Olubi introduced the fashion brand into the market. And the interesting thing is that Super Q has remained popular among celebrity woman since then.
Deaconess Detoun Olubi herself has continued to remain on top, as one of the foremost Aso-Oke Matriarchs in Lagos. She is also one of the most accomplished Aso-Oke manufacturersin the fashion industry.
She has been producing Aso-Oke since 1984. This is her 35th year in this lucrative business. And she has remained active in it, producing and selling good quality Super Q from her Medina Estate, Gbagada base for very many years.
Her brand of Aso-Oke has stood the test of time. That is why once her clients buy from her and enjoy her Aso-Oke fabric, they not only come back, they bring friends and family members. That is why she has sold Aso-Oke to 3 generations of families.
City People visited her last Wednesday and found that Deaconess Detoun Olubi is still actively involved in the day to day running of her Super Q aso oke business as ever before, despite the fact that she is now in her 70s.
There is nothing about her to show that she is that far gone in age. She has been able to maintain her graceful and elegant look.
Her flawless skin glows. She is very healthy. And she has remained her ever bubbly self. She is a grandmother.
She started her business when she was quite young in her early 40s and she has kept at it for decades, not giving up. In fact, her daughter has joined her. She exports finished Aso-Oke products abroad, where there is huge demand for it.
Though she is over 70 and will be 75 in a few years, little has changed about her. She is ageing gracefully. When City People visited her at home in Lagos we met a happy woman who is at peace with herself. We met a happy and sweet looking septuagenarian who enjoys good health. With the exception of a few strands of grey hair, there is nothing to show that this Ijebu Ilishan born business woman is far gone in age. She has remained as beautiful as she has always been. She still has that permanent smile. She cuts the picture of a woman at peace with herself. She has become deeply religious. She is a Deaconess in the Methodist Church.
She told City People last week the secret of how she has continued to look graceful. She says its because she does not see herself being in competition with anybody. She feels fulfilled that she has sold Aso-Oke to all the who is who in Nigeria like Governors wives, Ministers, etc. Over the last 3 decades all the high & mighty in Nigeria, from the top to the bottom have patronised her. Her list of clients is robust. There is hardly any top society woman that she has not sold Aso-Oke to. And the good thing about her is that she has been able to keep and retain her customers till today. And many more customers are being added everyday.
What has been her staying power, we asked her. “It is the Grace of God”, she says. “It can only be God.”
“Then I have remained steadfast and focused on my business. I didn’t deviate. When all sorts of Aso-Oke products got introduced, like Net Aso-Oke, I didn’t join them. I didn’t change my pattern. I stayed in my lane doing what I thought was right. Some left to start wearing Net Aso-Oke, but they were soon to come back.”
When City People visited her last week, we found out that her Super Q Aso-Oke is still in high demand, as she kept getting calls from both the old and new clients. She has a lot of orders to keep she and her team busy. She has a lot of orders that will keep her busy till the end of 2019. The next 3 months will be extremely busy for her, business wise, because many celebrities have ordered for Super Q Aso-Oke from her.
But because she has capacity she can cope with the orders. She has an awesome team and equipment that enables her take as many orders as much as possible.
She has a reputation for delivering on due dates. She also has the capacity to cope with all the orders she gets.
