Nigeria confirmed 136, 030 COVID-19 cases, including 1,632 deaths, with 110, 449 discharged cases and 23, 949 active cases according to the figures released on Thursday 4th February by the Nigeria Centers for Disease Control, NCDC.
In the past 28 days, 10 African countries; Algeria, Botswana, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda have reported the highest number of new cases, accounting for 90 per cent of all infections in Africa. This calls for concerted efforts home and abroad in facing the pandemic head-on. Meanwhile, Lagos Virologist and researcher, Dr. Ademola Adesoye has given glad tiding that surviving Malaria can help boost a person’s immunity against COVID -19.
The vast researcher revealed to City People how the virus operates and why recovery from Malaria could help the body to successfully combat the virus.
“COVID 19 is not just a virus. That’s the area the virologists are always against the people building the vaccines. Vaccines work, although the kinds of vaccines we have now are not the real vaccines we always have when we have challenges. The vaccine that we have now is the vaccine from DNA, RNA a kind that’s structured. What I am trying to say is that these Vaccines have a lot of effects. By boosting our immune system but if care is not taken, we may have some damages I may not like to expand more than this as a virologist. And secondly, there’s this mutation. COVID-19 that we have last year is different from the COVID we have now. IT’S ANOTHER stain developed from the first one. By the time we battle it to a certain level; I believe to a certain level as a virologist that we will have another one.”
Meanwhile implored Nigerians to observe protocols set aside to continue to stay safe and healthy as well as prevent second wave spread of the deadly virus, which he claimed might lead reach its third phase.
“What we can do is ask the people to continue to use their nose mask properly, wash your hands with soap and water at least 30 times a day. And whenever you are going out to a place they don’t have soap and water, go with Alcohol based Sanitizer and make sure you rub it on your hands often and often. I attended a programme this Saturday and my sergeant at arm was with me. Whenever I want to hold the Mic., I will pour the sanitiser on my palm and spray the microphone to a point that the chairman of the day at that ceremony said Oga! You have picked this microphone about four times today, and you have been spraying it every time and when we are taking it back, we are not spraying it. Then I said that it’s not good for a Virologist to have COVID 19.”
He further reassured Nigerians that escaping Malaria would boost their immune system to battle COVID 19.
“This is very important and I want the whole world to note, once you have Malaria, you have had something related to COVID 19. If you are able to escape that Malaria, your immune system will boost. I have been telling my people, if you have not had Malaria during this COVID-19, you have not gotten yourself safe. But once you have malaria, just continue to follow protocol COVID will not be your portion. Because all the symptoms you see in COVID, they are Malaria symptoms. The only difference is that in Malaria, you will be able to smell, in COVID 19, you will not be able to smell. Once you noticed that you do not smell well, please go for a check; you have had COVID 19. And once you are able to get out of it, your immune system will boost, so you don’t need vaccination again.”
