Gbenga Omotoso, the Honorable Commissioner has described the recent CNN report on Lekki as a partial report on a delicate matter that is under an ongoing reputable panel in Lagos.
Speaking at the Citypeople’s 24th anniversary, Mr Gbenga, who also doubles as a renown journalist, warns against peddling social media driven reports, as it may heat up unnecessary polity.
The condemned the report of CNN in its entirety as lacking balanced reportage.
He stated:
“It is important that Lagosians and Nigerians disregard the video purportedly released by CNN, as it does not represent what actually happened at the Lekki toll gate during the EndSARS protest.
“As a responsible government, we have set up a transparent panel to look into all the events that transpired at the Lekki toll gate and so far, we have not ascertained the viability of the purported massacre, as no one, as of now, has come out to claim his or her family member died st the protest ground.
“We have followed up all the videos and photos posted online as victims, and almost all of them have proven to be false.
“The purported victims whose faces were flaunted online came out to debunk reports that they were dead. There is a woman whose video went viral online, claiming she lost her son during the protest, but her deceased son’s friends have come out to debunk the story. They said the young lad died in a Okada accident along with his friend, and they were nowhere near the protest ground.
“Thus has been the case for about a month after the event.
He advised all conventional media platforms to practice journalism as professionally as possible, and eschew social media broadcast that lacks authenticity.
He also assured Lagosians that the state will work towards ensuring that the recovery process will be quick and beneficial.
