The National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has warned that the country will be in danger if opposition is eliminated.
Apart from that, it said that the country would sink deeper and that lives and property would also be in danger.
The Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, stated this while addressing members of the party’s strategic committee in Abuja on Wednesday.
He warned that if the opposition party was eliminated and encumbered, nobody would be safe in the country, adding that that it would be in the interest of the nation to have a virile opposition party.
The former governor of Kaduna State, who said that the PDP would “fly again,” appealed to the judiciary to be fair as the party waits for the Appeal Court judgment in Port Harcourt.
“Justice should be done and seen to be done in a manner that the whole world will see that the judiciary is doing the right thing,” he added.
He said that some Nigerians were already apologising for voting the PDP out of power in 2015.
Makarfi, however, said that Nigerians would do well if they could vote the PDP back to power in 2019.
He said, “We are reviewing and rebranding the party, it is only the judgment in Port Harcourt we are waiting for and we are praying for a fair judgment that will revive the hope of the people.
“If you eliminate or encumber the opposition, nobody will be safe. It is for the interest of Nigeria that there is opposition. Some people are already apologising for voting us out of office, but we are telling them to vote for us and return us to power in 2019.
“That is the only way we can be sure of their apology; anything less than that is not acceptable. We are the opposition party waiting to return to power.”
Advising the PDP members to criticise wisely and also to come out with alternative solutions, Makarfi said that the party would not blackmail the ruling APC.
Speaking on the crisis in the party, the Caretaker Committee Chairman said that the party would only embark on reconciliation after standing on a strong foundation.
He added that the party “does not need a reconciliation that will open a loophole for another crisis (in the future).”
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Strategy Committee, Prof. Jerry Gana, explained how far the committee had gone in its assignment, adding that syndicates were set up to look into the issues facing the party.
He said that members of the party across the nation were behind the caretaker committee, adding that “we trust that very soon, judgment will be delivered and the party will move forward. May God favour us in the Court of Appeal.”
Members of the party responded to the prayer with a thunderous “amen.”
The former ruling party is currently factionalised with Makarfi heading one group while a former Governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, is also heading another faction.
The crisis in the party has also led to the closure of its national secretariat located at Wuse Zone 5, since May 2016.
While Sheriff is insisting that he remains the national chairman of the party, Makarfi on the other hand, is claiming to have the mandate of the party which he said was handed to him at its national convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on March 19, 2016.
The mandate, he said, was renewed in August last year.
