After various banks concluded performance review exercise tailored to reward members of staff who have excelled as well as disengage those who performed poorly in the last 6 Months and financial year, the total number of banks’ staff has decreased from 77,096 in the first quarter (Q1) 2017 to 75,607 in Q2 2017.
This was contained in a report of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The latest data from the NBS showed that total volume of 327,366,042 transactions valued at N19.78 trillion were recorded in Q2 2017 as data on Electronic Payment Channels in the Nigeria Banking Sector revealed.
According to NBS, as Nigerians made N42 trillion e-payment transactions in six months, Automated Teller Machine (ATM) transactions dominated the volume of transactions recorded. 187, 805, 431 volume of ATM transactions valued at N1.54 trillion were recorded in Q2 2017.
In terms of credit to private sector, a total of N15.71 trillion worth of credit was allocated by the banks in Q2 2017. Oil & Gas and Manufacturing sectors got credit allocation of N3.53 trillion and N2.22 trillion to record the highest credit allocation in the period under review. Similarly, Telecoms data for Q2 2017 reflected that a total of 143,064,490 subscribers were active on voice as against 153,295,652 in Q3 2016 which represented 6.67 per cent drop in subscribers’ base.
Also, a total of 92,136,023 subscribers were active on internet as against 93,776,711 in Q3 2016 which represented 1.75 per cent drop in subscribers’ base.
Lagos State according to the data, has the highest number of subscribers in terms of active voice per State in Q2 2017 and closely followed by Ogun and Oyo States respectively while Bayelsa and Ebonyi States have the least number of subscribers. Similarly, Lagos State has the highest number of subscribers in terms of active internet per State in Q2 2017 and closely followed by Ogun and Oyo States respectively while Bayelsa and Ebonyi States have the least number of subscribers.
MTN with 37.22 per cent, has the highest share of voice subscription and followed by GLO (26.23 per cent), AIRTEL (23.92 per cent), EMTS (12.63 per cent) and others (0.29 per cent) respectively. Similarly, MTN (34.60 per cent) has the highest share of internet subscription and followed by GLO (29.68 per cent), AIRTEL (22.02 per cent), EMTS (13.70 per cent) and others (0.59 per cent)
