So my first piece as this column debuts finds me anchoring on the issues bordering around morality and reality with respect to the issue of Big Brother Nigeria.
This is a show that came back on the airwaves weeks ago and it has succeeded like it did last year and the years before it, in bringing people of like minds together because you find that people finish up with whatever they have scheduled for the time the programme is to come on air so that they can watch it without distractions.
Let me not bore you with so much talk about the side salads of the programme just so you can enjoy my real meal here! Last year I watched the programme religiously and joined in all the permutations about who was going to get evicted or who was going to win the show, I was truly interested in watching and my favorite Housemate was Bisola, the Loud, Dark, Domineering, Down to earth and Intelligent lady who was beaten to the 1st position but today she is truly holding her own in her own space and beyond!
As with all other editions of the programme, nudity happened to be part of the routine of course there wouldn’t be any way you could take a shower without taking your clothes off so as usual people talked and yelled at one another while watching the show and at some point over the years, the shower hour had to be blocked just so you can “subscribe” to watch all the bathroom goodies!
Yes!!!! The men loved to watch the shower hour so they can see the women washing their beautiful bodies, the boobs, the V-area so that they can get their kicks, I hear some even downloaded some of those videos on their phones to watch in their “quiet time” (Private business), many fell out with their wives who caught them sneaking a peek at naked bodies, the show broke up some relationships and some men had to move into different rooms so they could watch in peace away from the prying eyes of their wives!
It was simply the show to watch, as long as all the extras of touching, fingering, kissing and out rightly having sex was on display even though some did it under the duvet, people even bought extra petrol to start their gen sets just in case PHCN struck at any point!
There were points where people were instructed to kiss more than one person in the house at the same time and oral hygiene just comes to mind, what exactly is the motive or rationale behind asking a man or woman to go kiss other persons of the opposite sex all at the same period? So many things just didn’t seem right but then they were prepped before they agreed to get on the show!
Just as you have those who truly enjoyed the show because of all the perks, there were those who almost brought heaven down (if they could) just so the show won’t go on but wait, some of those overzealous folks were sneaking into places from time to time on their laptops and phones to watch the shows of the night before and they come out to scream IMMORALITY!
We live in such a pretentious environment where things are talked in hush tones, no one wants to talk about sex and its accompaniment because no one wants to be perceived as “spoilt” but we all have sex and it is the sweetest thing that the Almighty created, even the pastors know it so when they come up to knock the show, you just clearly see why the culture of silence is holding us down here.
Recently a known face and voice in the media in Lagos Mr Joe Igbokwe put up a post about his opinions regarding the BBN show, it made some sense to me and I shared that post, from the responses I found out that true to perception, people were on the 2 sides of the divide with respect to the show. I am sharing some of these responses with you
Onosetale Iyere Dennis- BBN….just a show of immorality…
Atinuke Eyinju Oluwa- Its optional, pls change your TV station to faith TV or islam TV,
Ayo Ozovehe- People hide in za oza room to watch porn, come out to talk saintly…..wetin concern omo boy? I don’t watch, but I don’t understand the criticism.
John Defiant- In as much as I quite agree that the show has no values or anything positive to give, I still don’t understand why someone will be crying that it is not our culture and so it should be scrapped.
Ogo Maduewesi- Simply entertainment, for those who love and enjoy it. no matter what we cry, greater percentage of all businesses are all profit driven in different presentations..
There are many channels we don’t watch yet we don’t talk about them, I think we need to leave someone’s business alone.
China IkwerreMan Acheru- It’s pay TV. If you don’t want then don’t subscribe. I’m tired of this eye service from Nigerians.
Pastor-Oluwatosin Olunuga- Joe igbokwe is absolutely right. Brazen display of immortality and shameless display of poor upbringing. Virtue really scarce these days.
Maleeq Oloyede- After reading some of the comment here, I clearly see that we don’t have an moral value anymore. And I wonder what the next generation will be like with what we are teaching/showing them. IFY if in the nearest future you see people having sex by the road side in broad daylight please don’t ask how did we get there.
Dokun Adedeji- Optional, yes, but remember the depravity we allowed when we cry to God to save us from the enveloping immorality so all pervading. Society is what it allows! Enjoy now and whine later!
Ayo Banjo- God bless whoever this Joe Igbokwe is. I forced myself against my inner wish to see an episode once, what a disgusting scene. They were all talking at the same time, rowdy, uncouth and near nudity. No clear objective as to why the programme is shoved down the throat of several beguiled Nigerians.
Ogo Maduewesi- Shoved down the throat….. Seriously???
China IkwerreMan Acheru- Pastor Ayo Banjo the show is not shoved down anyone’s throat. I’m sure there are at least 30 other channels on your dstv na, why focus on one you do not like? While we are at it, what moral of watching Africa magic teach us? Or telemundo? Or even football?
Toyin Oshodi Dasilva- It’s optional and it’s not on national TV though I don’t support what they do and again it’s an adult’s program
Petra O’Blakk- Not about culture. Its the time, the resources, the hype, the rewards for what???
Were you in doubt about people’s perceptions of the show? You don’t need to be, the show airs on Pay TV, there is parental control on the remote control and we need to stop presenting the holier than thou attitude just as we don’t have to crucify people who say they don’t like to watch the programme. Is the show interesting? Yes, Is it showcasing Immorality? Yes, Is it engaging the youths? Yes Is this engagement positively? No, Is the show generating revenue? Yes (for those involved and the eventual winner) Is there a take home from the show? Yes (depending on who watched) I learnt a few things from the endurance and composure required of the housemates when they had tasks to deliver on.
So from whatever corner or side of the divide we are standing, the word is live and let live, I said I wouldn’t waste my time like I did last year watching the show so I have not tuned in for once this season and I wont! The controls are in your mind and the decision is yours! Yes Morality is at stake and Yes also the Reality is on ground that there truly is nothing anyone can do about stopping the sponsorship of the show. No one is forced to watch the show! For those who love to watch, remember Big Brother is watching you always!
What’s on the front burner next week? There is just one way to find out!
