I just posted about the new pastime of the obese elite who have a wave of conscience.
It’s also the goto action for some others who want to draw attention to certain issues of grave concern.
Another group uses it as a veritable tool to stimulate public interest, participation and generate possible solutions.
I, Uri fall under each and every category just outlined above.
It’s the WALK…. Obese check. Attention to grave concern .. Check. Stimulate interest in public participation… Check check.
So about WALKS
Walks have been used for social change. Climate change policies. Stimulate the right action by the government. In different parts of the world WALKS WORK. Yes, they do.
Incidentally, those countries are not as populous as we are. secondly, they do not have our MYRIAD OF ISSUES. However, the dedication of the citizenry to the cause gets them the desired result.
In recent times we’ve seen a wave of ‘walkings’ its really a fantastic activation tool as well as a brand communication person. Sadly I see most of the walks more as activation of series of events that may not necessarily add any direct value to the system but will just be an item on the check list that will generate attention and selfies. Not forgetting the sports Gear designer oppressors. Nike Adidas etc.
Back to the series of walks. I just hosted an inclusion beauty pageant and walk was part of it. I crossed it out. I have done plenty of walks this year for other NGOs and the likes. Being on the street again this year? Naaaaa. Enough.
So we are a society in need of the very basics . we’ve lacked the very basic even the least advanced society can boast off. As citizens we can’t deny the fact that discomfort has become second nature to us. Discomfort in all ramifications. From the darkness of electricity to the holes in our pockets with empty plates without morsels. Add joblessness of millions of able bodied young men from 25-50. Forget the ones in their 50s and above. Our non existent health sector or the skyrocketing rents in the urban areas because Mr landlord is also part of the economy.
I could go and on and my heart bleeds for Nigerians. These decades of misrule misapplication of policies has robbed us of our sense of dignity. The average Nigerian is extremely dysfunctional.
We are comfortable in discomfort and have come to accept all these as the norm. Who lives that way ? We do . Sad reality is we do not know a better life for we’ve been enmeshed in these for decades.
Surprisingly we’ve also traveled and lived abroad so we know how societies operate.
So will Nigerians ever come out in droves to walk for bad road? No electricity? Social Amenities? Better education? End to looting? and so on and so forth.
Some Nigerians will rather walk for what does not place a direct demand to their welfare and seemingly confrontational to authorities. Who knows where ones bread is buttered . So the cosmetic walks will continue.
I know some have walked to power center and were handled roughy however if we can commit to walk for social change across the country and sustain it for a few days . I’m talking about millions in each state at once . But I’m talking to myself .
