Away from the fashion misgiving and wardrobe imperfection of former Borno state governor and running mate of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the forthcoming elections, Senator Kashim Shettima at 62nd Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, on Monday, August 22, 2022, the lawmaker thrilled the audience with a brilliant speech that will be archived by brilliant minds.
With facts, figures and eloquence he attended to the myriad of challenges confronting the Nigerian nation and proffered solutions using the unmatched milestones recorded by himself and Lagos state under the leadership of Bola Tinubu.
Aside from the fact that his speech was motivational, Shettima’s speech was reassuring, motivational and empirical just as it touched on the pain points of the common Nigerians, which include pertinently the economy and insecurity.
Not many people are also aware of the fact that he was a former General Manager of one of Nigeria’s leading bank, Zenith Bank. In his speech, he boldly stated that his regime in Zenith Bank was one of the fastest growing era and challenged anyone to confirm the figures.
His understanding of political administration and economy is superb and worthy of note.
Read his speech below:
When Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu became the Governor of Lagos State in 1999, there was only one ambulance in the service of the Lagos state government. Lagos was earning the sum of 700 million every month as internally generated revenue. Now Lagos is earning 51 billion naira ever month as its internally generated revenue. Lagos is the third largest economy in Africa and the world is in transition. It is important for a Nigerian leader if the new dispensation must be a leader who has a mastery of financial management capability and someone who understand the Nigerians psychology. Someone who appreciate and understand the complexity of the Nigerian nation.
Here, you have a city boy, who have transformed Lagos into a hub for all. My brother seated here he called Lagos hub, not Awka. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tibubu has established an excellent record of performance. He has mentored men and women who are excelling in different fields of human endeavour. And the world is checking. And the trajectory of global growth experience in Africa, and Nigeria could make or mar that transition.
And as Chinua Achebe said, the problem of Nigeria is internally and essentially that of leadership. Once we get the leadership question right, everything will fall into place in this age when all of us are talking of artificial intelligence, when others are talking of nano technology, of biotechnology we need a leader who has a skillset, who has the understanding of the global economy to shepherd us in this age. And if you get one, you are getting one for free. It’s the city boy. In Jim Ovia’s words, the sole barometer for accessing people is your level of competence and your input.
In the history of Zenith Bank, no one, I dare say apart from the legendary Adaoru Omeji.no one grew faster in the history of Zenith than my humble self. As I said earlier, the world is watching us. An the ultimate major of a man is, as Martin Luther king said, is not why, is not where in stands in comfort and convenience. But where he stands in times of difficulty and challenges. I urge my learned colleagues here, and my learned friends here, to be rational to be firm, you should have the boldness and the courage to make informed decision, not emotional decisions. Here we are, on the threshold of making history. In the United Kingdom,Reeshe Shunak, an indian is about to become the Prime Minister of Britain I urge you all to align yourself with the aspiration of APC candidate, because he has the competence, he has an established track record of performance, Lagos is not a tourist destination of choice is West Africa sub region. Lagos has the bossom, has the generosity of spirit to embrace all. And we are going to recreate the Lagos experience all over the country.
Your Excellency’s, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I urge you, I beseech you, I call on you, to use your rational sense of judgement. Make informed judgement on who you are going to vote for in the next dispensation. It is absolutely essential that you vote for competence, for capacity, for a leader who can lead us to the promise land. It is absolutely essential. Yes. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the man to beat.
