Meet VeryDarkMan, the online activist fighting for justice in Nigeria

by Promise Babatunde
In an age dominated by social media, where influencers often chase clout and profit, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), stands apart. The 30-year-old Edo State native has carved a niche for himself as a digital advocate for justice, using his social media platforms to expose wrongdoing, hold people accountable, and fight for the oppressed.
Unlike traditional activists who focus on government issues, VeryDarkMan takes on anyone—whether it’s a politician, business owner, or regular citizen—who uses their position to harm or take advantage of others. From exposing corruption to mediating personal disputes, he has become a digital enforcer of accountability, often referred to as Nigeria’s “online policeman.”
VeryDarkMan first gained attention in 2022 when he championed a consumer rights case against a skincare brand, Jenny’s Glow. A dissatisfied customer’s complaint about harmful products sparked VeryDarkMan’s intervention, leading to a campaign against unregulated products without proper NAFDAC approval.
In 2024, his involvement in a case against popular crossdresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, took his activism to another level. VeryDarkMan revealed alleged corruption in Nigeria’s correctional services, claiming Bobrisky avoided serving a jail term by paying bribes. His efforts led Bobrisky to settle an unpaid debt of N4 million, showing how quickly and effectively VDM can bring justice.
VeryDarkMan’s method—publicly calling out offenders with compelling evidence and issuing 24-hour ultimatums—has proven effective. Whether dealing with unpaid debts or social injustices, he delivers results with a speed unmatched by Nigeria’s legal and law enforcement systems.
VDM’s work goes beyond financial disputes. He tackles different issues, from cyberbullying to abuse of power. In one case, a senator’s wife detained a skit maker for highlighting a neglected road in her husband’s constituency. VDM intervened, demanding the skit maker’s release or threatening to make the senator and his family trend for the wrong reasons. The boy was freed within hours.
Beyond his advocacy, VDM has earned admiration for his philanthropic efforts. He recently launched an NGO focused on equipping public schools and providing quality education to underprivileged children. Within 24 hours of its announcement, over ₦75 million was donated, with contributions ranging from as little as ₦100 to as much as ₦100 million from record producer Don Jazzy.
Unlike many charity initiatives, what makes VDM’s charity work stand out is his transparency. He provides regular updates on how donations are spent, earning him even more trust from his supporters.
Some people criticize VeryDarkMan, calling his methods attention-seeking and aggressive. But many Nigerians see him as a hero who delivers results in a country where justice often feels out of reach.
