+How FAME & WOMEN Almost Ruined His Career
For 11 years and still counting, the City People Entertainment, an arm of the City People Media Group of Company, publishers of City People Magazine has been celebrating, honouring and playing host to Top Musicians, Comedians and Movie Icons, who have left indelible marks on the sands of time in their different careers. The Entertainment sector of the media organization was launched on 2nd February, 2006, precisely with the aim of taking Entertainment to its zenith and since then, it has not looked back, celebrating and playing host to the highest number celebrities in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
Afro-Juju Maestro, Sir Shina Peters, fondly called SSP was once again celebrated and honoured on Sunday, July 25, 2017 by City People Entertainment at its newly launched City People Event Centre located within the premises of its headquarters Lagos office.
It was an event of merriment and enlightenment. The Master of Ceremony was Dare Best-Alabi – an actor, movie/music video director and broadcaster. The Ibadan, Oyo State-born thespian, who is a very close friend of Sir Shina Peters anchored the show to the delight of guests as he revealed shocking details about the Afro-juju maestro.
Dare Best-Alabi kick-started the event of the day with a quick revelation of details of SSP’s life. After a stunning revelation of the mysterious birth of the singer as he said the singer was in his mother’s womb for 3 years before he was born, the MC further revealed how SSP’s Fame and Music saved him from Armed robbers in the Eastern part of the country while he was travelling for a show many years ago.
He told guests that Sir Shina Peters was the only Nigerian musician that has been released by armed robbers just by listening to him rendering some lines of his music to affirm his identity. In the story, he revealed that SSP was being chased by robbers and when he was caught, he was told to lie down as they tried to rob him, but he cried for help, telling them that he was Sir Peter Peters which they doubted. They told him to sing any of his songs, which he did and they were amazed, yet happy to see the musician. Bottom-line of the story, SSP gave them each of his music CD as he had no money on him and he was allowed to go free without being hurt.
The story of his birth would have remained a secret if not for the MC of the day, who revealed the mysterious birth of the singer at the recently held City People Gathering that celebrated Sir Shina Peters, penultimate Sunday. “Shina Peters is the only Abami Eda (meaning the Weird One) I know that stayed in his mother’s womb for 3 years and was born with a full set of grown teeth”, said the MC.
The MC, who revealed quite a number of things in the life of Sir Shina Peters – from how his name, music and fame saved him from wrath of armed robbers in the Eastern part of Nigeria to his philandering lifestyle as a music act kept no information hidden about the celeb. He stated that he knew Sir Shina Peters very well and that their long-age friendship had turned into a family affair.
SSP, who took to the stage and rendered a 16-minute speech, affirmed the mystery of his birth.
“The MC was telling you people that I spent 3 years in my mother’s womb, yes, he is right. Now, let me tell you my story so far, my story is a story of Destiny. I’ve been through a lot.” – Shina said.
SSP further went on to reveal many things about himself, how he started out at a tender age, why education wasn’t a priority to him among others things.
SSP’s father is Emmanuel Adakun Peters and his mother was the late Victoria Asake Peters, who passed away after noticing that her 2 children were of different fathers, but that’s a story for another day.
The MC also revealed that like all musicians, SSP has been romantically linked with so many women. Dare Alabi-Best. revealed how many women testified to the sexual prowess of the singer, describing him as a Super Stud.
Sir Shina Peters was soon after ushered on to the stage as he spoke on a number of issues that pertain to his life. He first showered praises on City People’s Publisher, Seye Kehinde for his consistency in celebrating music icons over the years.
He then revealed his journey into music: “ My sojourn in life is a journey of destiny. I would never be part of those who people see as millionaires or billionaires and at the end of the day the dirty ways their money was made would be revealed and their integrity would be spat on.

At the age of 10, I left my mother and went to play at Temi-Ogbe Hotel. Though, I never knew my father. I was the leader of choir. I played the organ, now called the Keyboard.I sang and did all it takes to be a complete artiste. All these were derived from inspiration as a member of C&S Family,” he said.
After a brief pause, the celebrator spoke on his education and grammatical blunders. “Now, when my mother came to me, telling me that I must go to school, I said OK, I am ready, but due to abject poverty, I wasn’t able to attend school. My parents were so poor that we all shared a single room. It’s a pity that people don’t really know my story. It’s a privilege for me to be among people and still be able to dialogue with them to a greater level of understanding. The reason being that I stopped schooling at Primary 6 and I never gave the impression that I furthered my education beyond primary school or that I am well educated. I have never told anyone

I have never told anyone or given people an impression that I attended a University or finished at Cambridge or Harvard. Even in the court (because I have so many court cases) I usually tell the Judge to please come down to my level. But I am grateful to God today for this non-educated man before you has given birth to lawyers, professors, medical doctors amongst others. For as long as I have produced kids and grandkids, who are successful, then I’m a success myself. For I am supposed to have turned out as a

For I am supposed to have turned out as a tout, so if today, Femi Otedola, Lanre Okeowo, Segun Awolowo and more are all my friends, then I deserve a round of applause.” he said.
The guests responded with a loud ovation for the Ace Crooner as he continued with his speech as the applause subsided and he spoke on his involvement with women. “I have never thought of having 2 women in my life or having more than 2 children. It is this job that pushes us out of way sometimes. King David was said to be a man after God’s heart, yet he was very promiscuous. It’s not easy fighting the temptation of being on stage playing and seing all the features women display while dancing.”
He continued as he revealed another intriguing issue of the night. He said and we quote “Do you know how many handkerchiefs have been charmed or how many notes that have been soaked in blood and people come to spray us with such notes and wipe our sweats with the handkerchiefs just to obtain a share from our glory because they see us as stars? If I am to return to this world a 2nd time, I would return a better person, but this one, I’m in it already, there’s no going back.”
Sir Shina Peters also revealed that his official marriage to his wife (the only woman he did marry by putting a ring on her finger) is still intact till date.
He ended his speech by prostrating before everybody to show appreciation to everyone present for making him who he is today.

Asides the fact that SSP played to the delight of guests present at the event, he also had guests requesting any of his old hits and he obliged by performing the songs.
Guests did merry away the night dancing to the hits and evergreen songs of Shina Peters as there was enough to drink and have fun with.
Light music was supplied by K-Melody and his Band boys at the beginning of the event before SSP took over. The Afro Juju creator is one of the most successful musicians in vogue. SSP as he’s fondly called has received numerous awards and recognition for his famed prowess in the art of writing lyrics, composition, choreography and musical ability.
In 1989, “Shinamania” swept Nigeria as young music fans rushed to buy “Sir” Shina Peters’ electrifying-debut album Afro-Juju Series 1. What Shina had to offer was a powerful fusion of juju, Afro-Beat, and intense Fuji-style percussion, and people were enthralled and more than eager to buy into it.
Sir Shina Peters was born on May 30, 1958 in Ogun State. He started his career as a guitarist with General Prince Adekunle, one of the pioneers of Juju music. He later formed his group with a Juju maestro, SegunAdewale.Sir Shina Peters went on to form his own band in the 80’s after releasing many albums with SegunAdewale. His first album as a solo musician, Ace (Afro-Juju Series 1), hit double platinum and was his career breakthrough that made him a household name in the Nigerian music industry. He’s regarded as the creator of a well-respected music subgenre, Afro Juju.
The new City People Event Centre was decorated in a Purple and White theme by Partneed, which gave the hall a royal setting, as the stage was placed at the center of the hall.
