A recent study conducted by the University of Connecticut in America has found something that many of us had already suspected – that sex makes you a lot more honest than usual.
According to the study, titled Orgasms and Alcohol Influence Pillow Talk and published in the National Communication Association journal, after an orgasm, people are more likely to reveal their deepest secrets. Also, post-orgasm communication is often positive because of the release of the oxytocin hormone which encourages feelings of love and sociability.
“Post-coital communication is likely linked to sexual and relationship satisfaction. For this reason, pillow talk may play a pivotal role in maintaining intimacy,” lead author of the study Amanda Denes said in a statement.
The study goes on to explain that high oxytocin levels make people more trusting, less stressed and creates “a reduced perception of threat”. However, the same can’t be said for “drunken sex”, sex that happens after having consumed alcohol.
While sexual partners might still share information with each other after an orgasm, when alcohol is involved, the information shared is less likely to be important or positive.
“Oxytocin is an ‘upper’ and alcohol is a ‘downer’, so it’s not surprising that they have opposite effects on behaviour. People who drink more alcohol on average perceive fewer benefits to disclosing information to their partners,” said Tamara Afifi, a co-author of the study and a professor at the University of Iowa.
So remember that one-night stand you confessed your love to? Well, take comfort in knowing that you’re not to blame for some of the things you now regret having said.
