Juju is the all-time favourite Nigerian music genre and the music, just like the others, is known for high level of energy and passion.
For those who don’t know, Juju music is a genre of Nigerian music that dates back to the early 20th century. The first Juju songs were created by the likes of Tunde Nigthingale, who is considered to be the father of Juju music. His songs were based on traditional Yoruba folk tunes, and they featured simple percussion and vocal melodies.
But all of that has changed, Juju music is now characterised by high-energy, fast paced style. One of the most significant changes came in the 1970’s when Juju music began to incorporate a bit of highlife and Afrobeat.
This new wave was pioneered by the likes of KSA and Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey. They brought Juju into the mainstream. What has helped Juju stand out and become acceptable is its use of traditional Yoruba percussion instruments.
These instruments include the Talking Drum, which is used to communicate messages and tell stories. Juju music also features various vocal styles, from gentle singing to energetic chanting. The lyrics of Juju songs often deal with themes of Love, Happiness and social issues.
