Many men would argue that we have slob-values built into the very fibre of our beings, and that there’s nothing we can do about it. Quite honestly, I wouldn’t completely disagree. We’ve probably all been guilty of leaving our underwear on the floor right next to the washing basket, or hiding dirty socks under the bed because getting them washed is just too much of an effort.
While all of this may be true, there are certain bad grooming habits we should really work hard to break. At some point in your journey of manhood you have to learn to fully embrace a clean look, even if just for the sake of creating a good impression.
Here’s our list of seven things you need to fix today:
Poor dental hygiene
Dental care is not and never has been a mere suggestion; it’s a daily must-do. If you’re not brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing every day, then you’re doing it wrong. Not keeping to proper dental protocol can lead to a variety of problems including bad breath (which we’ll deal with later in the list), cold sores and some even more extreme nasties like oral cancer. Proper dental care shouldn’t take you more than 10-15 minutes a day, so there’s really no excuse.
Nose hair
While nasal hair has its purpose – filtering out dirt from the environment – when they begin to protrude it’s not a pretty sight. Ask any lady – she’ll confirm this. Not all of us are fans of visiting salons to get our grooming on, but the best way to deal with protruding nasal hair is to get it waxed out. This pulls the hair from the root, so that it doesn’t grow back quickly, and also makes for much lighter breathing. Alternatively, you can also use a trimmer.
Nail biting
This is probably one of the hardest habits to break, but the cosmetic benefits of not biting your nails versus the cosmetic damage done to them by biting them should make it that much easier. Write yourself a contract with yourself if you have to because there’s nothing less cool than a grown man with nails that are bitten to the quick.
Private clipping
When you do stop biting your nails and finally start using a clipper to trim them down, don’t clip them in the lounge on a magazine right next to your wife or partner. Some people find it really disgusting, so rather clip your nails in a more private setting like the bathroom or your bedroom, and dispose of them immediately.
Pubic displays of . . . affection
Pun intended! While it might be the ultimate epitome of contentment and comfort, it has never been and never will be appropriate to have your hands in your pants in public. We know that a pubic shave, heat or sweat rash can get unbearably itchy, but try by all means to keep out of the public eye when having a good scratch.
Do away with patches
Different women have various feeling about men with hair, men without hair, and men that are just in between.
So, while how you maintain your body hair is completely up to you, having patches of hair on random parts of your back, your chest, your legs, anywhere on your body is not a good look. Quickly deal with those with a trimmer and keep your hair even.
Hair in the tub
It’s standard practice to shave over the sink, and in the bathtub or shower. But over time, the hair that you wash down the drain clogs it up. To prevent this from happening, take a mug and fill it up with hot water and rinse any stubble and hairs left on your razor in the mug. When you’re done, flush the water down the toilet.
Bad breath
Bad breath can be a problem, especially since you probably don’t know whether you have it or not. It can often be caused by a lack of food consumption during the day or not brushing your teeth thoroughly enough. So it’s important to keep some mints in your man-bag and a mouthwash in your office drawer to quickly rinse your mouth out during a lunch break.
