Dr. Abiodun Salami is a DNA Specialist. He is the Chief Medical Director of the DNA Centre in Lagos. Last week, he made shocking revelations to City People, how these days many fathers are suddenly discovering that those they feel are their biological children don’t belong to them, after conducting DNA tests.
Do you know that more and more first borns are being found to belong to other men? Do you know that more and more fathers are discovering that they are not the true fathers of their kids?
The CMD of DNA Centre has revealed all these and many more. He says on a daily basis at the centre, they discover shocking revelations that many men have been living under the deception that they are the fathers of children who belong to other men. He says through DNA, many men have come to realise that the children they have been taking care of as their kids are not theirs, but were fathered by another man.
He also revealed that the rate of paternity crisis is on the increase as more and more marriages are breaking up as a result of DNA Results, which increasingly show that many of the kids of the elites brought to the centre for test and profiling, were fathered by other men.
He also revealed that lately, there has been a noticeable increase in infidelity and promiscuity, which has led to a lot of paternity crisis.
According to Dr. Abiodun Salami, who is a forensic geneticist many fathers are unknowingly nurturing children who are not biologically theirs. Salami says 50% of all the paternity tests carried out at his centre have given shocking results. He said more shocking is the discovery through DNA that many 1st born children were not born by the men they think are their dad. More shocking is his discovery that half of the paternity tests carried out over the last few years at the centre showed that the fathers were not biologically related totheir children.
He explained that there are more dramaticc cases where 2 men claiming paternity of a child have been found not to be the biologically fathers from test results, leaving the mothers to look elsewhere for the child’s biological father “we have seen shocking cases where many celebrity men even discover that 3 or 4 children out of 5 they had were not fathered by them,” he explained.
Salami attributed the increase in paternity disputes to infidelity, adultery and sexual recklessness among Nigerian couples. He said recent trends suggest that unprotected sex and multiple partner relationships are a common occurrence. He also revealed that it is because most first born pregnancies are unplanned and because many women for one reason or the other, often decide to give one man’s pregnancy to their other partner, as the owner of the pregnancy, without the husband’s knowledge.
As a geneticis, Salami says he has discovered on a daily basis that more babies are increasingly being switched without their mothers’ knowledge by nurses, birth attendants and health workers in hospitals. He says baby switching are happening at a disturbing rate in hospitals these days due to avoidable errors.
It is because of all these controversies that Dr. Salami is advocating for maternal and paternal DNA testing. He is worried that most Nigerians still use physical resemblance to fathers as a test of paternity when lately, there have been numerous cases recorded where a child resembles a father but DNA test results show that such a child and father are not related.
What happens at the DNA Centre, he was asked.
“What we do here is that we run DNA tests” he says, “and there are several types of DNA tests. The most prevalent is the paternity testing which is about 80% of the kind of DNA tests that we do. We also do maternity testing where the alleged mother is not the biological monther of the child. That one too is getting more popular now. We do testing if you want to test if 2 brothers or 2 siblings are of the same parents. If a brother or a sister wants to know if they truly share common parents either from father or mother’s side.
We also do what we call Avuncular testing. Maybe the alleged father is late, and the brother of the dead parents say ok, my brother is late, but they brought this child. We want to know if he is actually from our family. We do Aunt to Niece testing. That is the female end of it. We do genetic Profiling. We give you a certificate of your genetic profiles which you can store, which you can give to your lawyers, you can put in your WILL so when you are late, they don’t need to start getting court orders to go and exhume your body to do any testings when there are issues. There are several types of testings that we do.
