The speaker of the Anambra State Children’s Parliament, Rt. Hon Ekwunife Victory has called on the governors of southeastern states and the Diaspora to help make sure that their administration supports the mandatory education of the girl-child saying that the rate of rape, early marriage and others is a cause of female children not going to school.
The speaker stated this during a press briefing on education for crisis-affected girls in the Anambra state secretariat during the annual sitting of the children’s parliament, Awka independently sponsored and organised by the state minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Ify Obinabo at the state capital, Awka.
The National Ambassador of Anambra state to the National Children’s Parliament, Charles Ndukauba said that it is a clarion call for the parents to serve that the rate of female caused gender social vice is much in Nigeria all because there is neglect from the educational sector. He said that it is therefore necessary to take into consideration and efficiently, the effects of conflicts in the region on education which captivated the large number of out-of-school children, particularly the girl-child in South eastern Nigeria.
He said rape, unwanted pregnancy, armed conflicts, humanitarian crises, kidnapping plus the total rate of inflation in the economic system have put the lives of millions of people into manacles of segregation. Hence girls need to study to make it in life.
“Girls living in fragile and conflict areas are particularly disadvantaged in terms of accessing primary and secondary education which deprives them of their right to education.
“Families prioritize their girls hawking on the street to raise money for feeding the family or getting them married early so that their husbands can support their poor families which makes them vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, and early pregnancies for their bodies that are not ready to carry children.
