New Governor-General, Alhaji HAMEED SOYEMI
On February 22, 2025, the newly elected Governor-General of the High Society Club of Nigeria, Alhaji Hameed Soyemi, alongside his management team, hosted a grand inaugural event to mark the official launch of their administration.
The remarkable gathering took place at the club’s premises in Shomolu, Lagos, drawing an impressive turnout of members and distinguished guests. The event was not just about celebration; it featured the club’s revered tradition of Ire Owo—a fundraising initiative aimed at supporting the club’s development. Amidst an atmosphere of entertainment, networking, and camaraderie, generous donations poured in, reinforcing the spirit of unity and growth.
In an exclusive interview with City People’s JAMIU ABUBAKAR, Alhaji Soyemi opened up about his journey to leadership and his ambitious plans to elevate the club to new heights. Below are excerpts from the conversation:
Congratulations on your election as Governor-General. Can you tell us the significance of today’s event?
Thank you. Today’s event is significant for several reasons. Traditionally, after a new executive committee is elected, we kick-start our weekly Ire Owo fundraising. However, after my election on January 26, I requested a short delay—about three weeks—to implement some immediate infrastructure upgrades to enhance the club’s environment. It was essential for me to bring it up to a certain standard before officially launching our programs.
By divine arrangement, this date also happens to be the last Saturday before Ramadan, so I thought, why not make it a grand affair? We’ve taken the usual Ire Owo lunch and elevated it, setting the tone for the standard of excellence I intend to maintain.
The Ire Owo lunch seems to be a big part of the club. What is its significance?
Absolutely! Ire Owo is more than just a gathering; it is the heartbeat of the High Society Club. Beyond fostering camaraderie, it serves as a vital fundraising mechanism. Members, even those unable to attend, contribute generously. Already, we have raised over a million naira today, and I expect this figure to rise significantly. The funds go directly into the club’s development projects, ensuring that we continue to grow and improve.
Your election was highly anticipated. How did you emerge as Governor-General?
I contested for this position last year, but as we say, “God’s time is the best.” Back then, things didn’t align in my favor, but I remained steadfast. This year, Alhamdulillah, the story changed, and I was elected by the will of God and the support of my fellow members.

Was the election process challenging?
It had its fair share of intensity. Elections naturally come with some division, but I believe leadership is about unifying people. The day after my victory, I personally visited my main opponent to reassure him that this was not about winning or losing—it was about the collective progress of the High Society Club. I extended the same hand of friendship to other contestants, emphasizing that we are all part of the same family. That gesture helped to bridge gaps and strengthen unity within the club.
What do you think set you apart during the election?
My Unique Selling Proposition (USP) is simple: I am committed to raising standards. From the club’s infrastructure to its programs, I believe in excellence. Even today, you can see the difference in the environment—just three weeks into my leadership, the club already looks better. I intend to maintain this momentum and elevate every aspect of our operations.
What are your key plans and initiatives for the club?
We are introducing several innovations:
- Enhanced Weekly Programs – While the Ire Owo Saturday Lunch remains our flagship event, we are expanding our social calendar to include themed gatherings on other days—Monday Groove, Tuesday Groove, Thursday Groove, Friday Groove, and Sunday Groove. These will create more opportunities for engagement among members.
- Capital Development Projects – A significant portion of the Ire Owo funds is dedicated to infrastructure development. We’ve already begun upgrading our reception area, office spaces, and other facilities, ensuring a more comfortable and refined environment for our members.
- Membership Standardization – We are refining the criteria for joining the club to ensure we maintain a high-caliber membership. This means welcoming more professionals, entrepreneurs, and individuals who align with our values.
- Community Engagement & Social Responsibility – Beyond our internal affairs, we will continue giving back to society. Our annual Governor-General’s Day, held on October 1st, includes visits to motherless babies’ homes and other charitable initiatives.
Why does the club use the title “Governor-General” instead of President?
The High Society Club was founded in 1960-61, around the time Nigeria still had a Governor-General as its political head. The club adopted the title to mirror that structure, and we have preserved this tradition ever since. Similarly, our Vice Governor-General is referred to as “Presidio,” maintaining our unique identity.
You’ve been a member since 2007. What inspired you to join?
I was introduced to the club by my uncle. At the time, I was exploring business opportunities in import and export, and through the club, I met Dr. Segun, who was already established in that field. That connection was invaluable—it opened doors for me to venture into exporting cocoa and timber. This club isn’t just a social space; it’s a powerful networking hub where business relationships flourish.
What are the requirements for joining the High Society Club of Nigeria?
To qualify, an applicant must:
Be at least 21 years old, preferably a graduate with career prospects.
Be a child of an existing member (this grants an express pathway).
Be financially stable, as the membership fee is around ¦ 200,000.
Undergo a six-month probationary period, during which their character and commitment are evaluated.
Receive recommendations from at least two members.
Be mentored by a senior member before final induction, which takes place during our prestigious Dinning of Gold ceremony.

How diverse is the club’s membership?
Currently, we have more senior members than younger ones, but we are actively working to balance the demographics by attracting fresh, vibrant professionals. The goal is to sustain the club’s legacy while infusing new energy and ideas.
What philanthropic activities does the club engage in?
We are deeply committed to giving back. Our Governor-General’s Day, held annually on October 1st, is a week-long celebration that includes charitable visits and a grand event where our patron, the Ooni of Ife, participates. Our Ire Owo initiative also plays a role in supporting various causes.
A bit about you—what is your background?
I hail from the Agunle Ruling House of Okanwa and will soon be crowned as the Owa of Okanwa. I am a chartered accountant and a graduate of the University of Lagos (Class of 1986, Economics). I also attended the Lagos Business School and am a proud member of multiple elite social and Islamic organizations, including Bobagunte Akile Ijebu, Association of Friends, and Ansarudeen Ebutte Meta Division II.
Final words for the members and supporters of the High Society Club?
My vision is clear: to elevate our club’s standards, expand our social and business networks, and foster unity. The work has already begun, and I invite all members—old and new—to join hands in making this a golden era for the High Society Club of Nigeria. Together, we rise!
