Rotary Club of Akowonjo empowers girls through digital literacy on international day of the girl child

by Reporter

The Rotary Club of Akowonjo recently celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child at Millennium Secondary School and Community Junior Grammar School in Egbeda, Lagos, with a focus on the theme “Empower Her: Digital Skills for Today and Tomorrow.” By choosing local educational institutions as the venue, the club aimed to engage directly with students, fostering digital literacy among girls and equipping them with essential skills to navigate an increasingly digital world. This initiative underscores the club’s commitment to creating an empowering educational environment where girls can envision successful futures.

Aligning with Rotary’s core values of service, integrity, and inclusivity, the event highlighted the importance of equipping girls with digital skills to enhance their educational and career opportunities, ultimately promoting gender equality. Despite significant barriers—such as limited access to technology and societal norms that prioritize boys’ education—Rotary’s efforts serve to address these challenges and create supportive programs that encourage girls’ participation in technology and education.

Looking ahead, the Rotary Club of Akowonjo plans to implement ongoing projects that promote digital literacy, including year-round workshops offering training in technology and coding, as well as partnerships with tech companies to improve resources. The club aims to organize an annual STEM fair that showcases the achievements of girls in technology, fostering a sense of community and empowerment. Through these initiatives, the Rotary Club reinforces its dedication to ensuring that young women are equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in a technology-driven society.
