In recognition of her remarkable contribution to environmental science and sustainable development, Dr. Eucharia Chukwukwe has been honoured with the Award for Outstanding Research in Environmental Pollution and Remediation by Citypeople Magazine. The award ceremony was held on January 29, 2023, in Lagos State, Nigeria.
Dr. Chukwukwe, who serves with the Ministry of Environment, Abia State, and lectures in the Department of Chemistry at Abia State University, Uturu, was celebrated for her groundbreaking research in Environmental Pollution Studies and Sustainable Remediation. Her work focuses extensively on Phytoremediation and the Bioaccumulation Dynamics of Heavy Metals in industrial effluent–contaminated soils across oil-producing communities in the Niger Delta.
Her pioneering studies have provided fresh insights into the mechanisms of heavy metal uptake, soil recovery, and the use of hyperaccumulator plant species for cost-effective and eco-friendly remediation. These findings are critical to restoring polluted soils, improving environmental health, and strengthening agricultural resilience in affected communities.
The award citation emphasized her “exemplary dedication to environmental protection and scientific advancement,” noting that her research has informed practical frameworks for sustainable environmental management and community-based rehabilitation.
Beyond advancing academic knowledge, Dr. Chukwukwe’s work continues to shape policy direction and inspire a new generation of environmental scientists committed to tackling Nigeria’s complex ecological challenges.
Her recognition on January 29, 2023, stands as a testament to her leadership, innovation, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the environment.
