How many times have you had a heated conversation about the right and wrong way to apply cologne? And how many times has a friend seen you applying cologne and judged your method?
If you’ve never been able to confirm whether you’re doing it properly or not, you will by the time you’ve finished reading this article. A fragrance expert reveals how men can maximise the scent of their cologne.
Lwandie Luzipho, PR manager for Jo Malone London South Africa, says cologne should be sprayed onto the body’s pulse points for maximum effect.
The wrist
“Spray on either sides of your wrists – but we don’t recommend that you rub it in. A lot of people spray on one wrist and rub it on to the other, but this tends to distort the notes of the fragrance,” Luzipho says.
The forearm
“You can spray on the forearm, then pat with your hands to warm up the cologne. Again, make sure you don’t rub; pat it gently along your forearm.”
Your neck
When you spray a fragrance on your neck, be sure to spray it on the pulse points, which are the warmest parts of your neck. This will maximise your cologne’s scent.
Behind your ears
“For a sultry whiff, apply your scent behind your ears, on your neck,” she says.
Never spray directly onto chest
“The problem with spraying directly on your chest is that that’s where the sun hits it directly most of the day. This could lead to problems in that area such as sunburn,” Luzipho explains.
