The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District at the National Assembly Dino Melaye who was arrested this morning, Monday, April 23, 2018 has been released.
The lawmaker was arrested and detained by Immigration officers at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport since early Monday morning.
Melaye’s spokesperson, Gideon Ayodele later told reporters that the Senator has been released after a stand-off that lasted about two and a half hours.
“Yes, he had been released almost an hour ago,” he said. “He was released after the police couldn’t pin anything on him.
“The immigration officials who thought they were trying to help the police when they initially detained him were also embarrassed that the police couldn’t take him into custody.”
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) spokesman had told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Melaye was arrested following a directive from authorities.
The Senator said he was on his way to Morocco on an official assignment sponsored by the Nigerian government when he was held by security.
