Nigeria’s economic challenges have led to necessary adjustments across various sectors, including telecommunications. In response to rising operational costs, industry leaders like Karl Toriola of MTN proposed a 100% tariff increase, while other telecom providers followed suit. Consequently, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a 50% tariff hike in February. Although many Nigerians expressed concerns over these increases, telecom companies argue that higher costs, including diesel expenses, make such adjustments unavoidable.
Without them, some providers risk shutting down. Among the industry players, Globacom (Glo), Nigeria’s only indigenous telecom company owned by billionaire Mike Adenuga, has taken a more consumer-friendly approach. While competitors implemented drastic tariff hikes, Glo introduced various initiatives to ease the burden on Nigerians, particularly the youth who rely heavily on data services.
One such initiative is the Glo eSIM 5GB Free Data Offer, extended even to customers from other networks. This offer allows users to access an additional SIM digitally, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card. Customers who purchase a data plan of ₦1,500 or more receive 5GB of free data. Additionally, Glo recently introduced a 15% bonus on all eTop-ups, ensuring customers get extra airtime with every recharge.
This bonus is valid for seven days and can be used for calls, data, or messaging. Beyond these offerings, Glo has partnered with leading brands like Samsung to provide Nigerians with exclusive deals. A recent collaboration allows customers to pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S25 and receive 18GB of bonus data over six months.
Pre-orders require an advance payment of ₦500,000, with deliveries starting from February 19. Glo has also launched promotional campaigns such as the Glo Festival of Joy, which has rewarded over 50 Nigerians with luxury vehicles like the Toyota Prado and other home appliances. Meanwhile, the Glo Lucky Number game has provided cash prizes ranging from ₦100,000 to ₦1,000,000 to lucky subscribers.
These initiatives highlight Glo’s commitment to supporting Nigerians during difficult times, distinguishing it as the only telecom giant prioritising customer welfare
