The Country Director of the Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, Rev John Joseph Hayab has called on the media to embrace responsible reporting as a vital tool for National development and unity.

Speaking at the breaking of fast (Itfar) jointly organised by the foundation and the Nigerian Union of Journalists(NUJ), Kaduna state council, Hayab noted that journalists wield enormous influence through their writing, stressing that their words shape public opinion, highlight truth and hold leaders accountable.

“In a country as diverse as Nigeria with multiple cultures, religions and aspirations, the role of the media goes beyond reporting events to shaping perceptions and facilitating dialogue.

He emphasised that Nigeria’s journey towards stability, development and unity requires a responsible media landscape that emphasises peace, accuracy and professionalism in its reporting.

Hayab urged journalists to uphold integrity by avoiding sensationalism capable of inciting fear or division within society.

He also encouraged the media to give voice to the voiceless by highlighting stories of resilience, cooperation and hope, while promoting dialogue across ethnic and religious divides.

“The media remains an essential partner in building a culture of peace where differences are respected, common ground is sought, and the national narrative reflects progress and promise”

Chairman of the Kaduna Council NUJ, Abdulgafar Alabelewe, commended Hayab for recognising the media as the watchdog of society and reaffirmed the commitment of journalists in the state to responsible reporting.
