Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo, is calling for a cultural shift regarding the tradition of spraying money at social events after being questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following her daughter’s glamorous wedding ceremony.
Iyabo Ojo revealed via her Instagram page that she was invited by the anti-graft agency on May 5, 2025, shortly after returning from the United Kingdom for questioning over the spraying of naira and foreign currencies during her daughter’s wedding.
The actress, known for her outspoken personality, disclosed that the EFCC showed her multiple video clips from the wedding as part of their investigation. The commission then asked her if she was aware that spraying money at events regardless of the currency was a criminal offense in Nigeria.
Iyabo Ojo admitted she thought the offence only applied to the abuse or mutilation of the naira. The officials reportedly used the opportunity to educate her on the broader financial regulations that prohibit money spraying in any form.
The interrogation, she said, also covered her personal history, work experience, and various business interests. While she was not detained, her lawyer, Barrister O.I. Salami, will be available to represent her should the EFCC request further engagement.
Following the experience, Iyabo Ojo issued a word of caution to fellow Nigerians: “Perhaps it’s time to reconsider this long-standing tradition. Let’s prioritise caution and avoid any potential problems.”
Her encounter with the EFCC has sparked renewed conversations on the clash between celebrations and financial laws in Nigeria, especially at flamboyant events.
