Mastering the art of business casual

by Arinze Ago

While the corporate dress code has become a bit more lax over the years, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to look your best with the least effort possible. Here are four items to help you do that

Over the years, the workplace has become increasingly casual and it can be very easy to fall into the overly-casual trap. If you think that wearing a suit would be a bit too much for your work environment, but you also don’t want a work-wardrobe full of Kaizer Chiefs T-shirts, then it’s time you switched over to a business-casual look.

With the business-casual look, there are two key things to keep in mind and aspire to: make sure that your clothes fit you perfectly, and build a wardrobe of basics. The whole point of business casual is to build a wardrobe as versatile as possible with very little effort – we promise, this makes dressing up in the morning a lot easier!

Here are the four business-casual essentials to kill the look everyday:

A fitted blazer

Suit Grey 2

Your first blazer investment has to be a lightweight navy blazer. Why navy? Well, the colour gives a cool-sophistication, it’s timeless and you can wear it with literally everything!

The next blazer investment you should make is a tweed blazer. This is your winter blazer and the texture of the jacket will always give you style points. It’s an easy material that doesn’t get dirty easily and especially works well when paired with silk knot ties, chambray shirts and cashmere cardigans.

Stock up on shirts

Shirts are your best friend for the business-casual look and you should stock up on as many of them as possible. The first thing to look out for when buying a shirt is to make sure that it fits well; not too loose around the collar and not too tight against the body. While you should own at least three white shirts, don’t be afraid to experiment with patterns, colours and denim.

Straight cut pants

If you currently own a pair of bootleg cut pants, here’s the first and only thing you must do with them: throw them in the bin! Your first choice should always be to grab a pair of straight cut pants, and stay away from the skinnys. These are flattering to very few men.

Suit pants are no longer the staple work pants, so you can invest in a variety of trousers. From dress jeans, to chinos, to chino shorts even!

Dress shoes

Monkstraps

We can promise you now that once you get your first pair of brogues, you will never want to buy a sneaker again. Partly because of how great they look, but mostly because of all the compliments you will get from random strangers and the odd hot girl. Shoes hold a lot of power over an outfit, they can literally make or break it.

From brogues, you can then move on to monkstraps, loafers, oxfords, and derbies. These can elevate the simplest of outfits and are absolutely necessary for every man’s wardrobe – business casual or not.
