The inauguration of Gist Magazine chapel of Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ took place on Monday,18th of September,2023 at Port Harcourt Rivers State. It was a gathering of professionals and high valued dignitaries who filled the no.2 Arochukwu street Off Nzimiro street Amadi Flats in Old GRA axis of Port Harcourt Rivers state. The conviviality and fostering of bonds among practicing and retired journalists was mostly the attraction of the Inauguration ceremony.
It had the presence of the Chairman of Rivers State Council Nigerian Union of Journalists NUJ Comrade Job Stanley Job;Â Comrade Mrs. Susan Serekara, Chairperson National Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ and other dignitaries who were present at the occasion.
Speaking during the ceremony, Publisher of GIST magazine, Mrs. Sotonye Toby-Fulton reiterated the importance of Nigerian Union of Journalists NUJ in promoting the welfare of Journalists culminating in the enhancement of professional standards. She eulogized the leadership of the Union in RIVERS STATE and those who played vital roles in the establishment of GIST magazine chapel as she urged them to hold firm the ideals of journalism.
The Publisher, stated that the Inauguration ceremony was the second coming of GIST magazine having earlier been registered with the Nigerian Union of Journalists NUJ in Rivers State. The Chairman of Rivers State Council of Nigerian Union of Journalists NUJ Comrade Job Stanley Job, in his remarks commended GIST magazine for taking bold steps to have it inaugurated while urging members of the Chapel to be guided by the principles of truth,accuracy and fairness in their news reportage.
The ceremony was concluded with the election of principal officers of the Chapel which include Mr. Smoke Ihuoma Okoronkwo as Chairman, Mr. John Martin Ijere as Secretary while Dormene C. Mbea became the Treasurer.
The current Chairman of the Chapel Comrade Job Stanley Job, administered Oath of office on the new executives. Speaking on behalf of the executives, Chairman of the Chapel Mr. Amike Okoronkwo, promised to uphold the tenets and ethics of Journalism practice and work for the betterment of the society, pledging that they will do their best in creating positive impact aimed at professional development and creating good environment in the society through responsible journalism practice in the country.
GIST magazine currently is a popular lifestyle magazine in Southern Nigeria with higher readership among the populace.
