A few days back, the Rotary Club of Akowonjo had its Investiture ceremony, where Rtn. Dr. Olasunkumi Esther Sam-Amoye was accorded as the 38 president of the club. City people had the chance to interact with her about her plans as the new president.
Below are the excerpts from the interaction.
What do you think of today?
So today we are having our investiture ceremony where I am formally being invested with the power to be signed over as a president. We are done with the board of directors, so this ceremony is to certify the fact that power has changed hands. A new president has come in. We do this every year, a Rotary investiture with a theme, so this year’s theme is “Creating Hope Through The World. So we have a new board of executives to serve humanity.
As the 38th President of the Rotary Club of Akowonjo, what are your plans?
This year, we intend to foster a better relationship with our communities and ensure that we are able to fulfill our obligations and our goals in all those service areas, 7 focus areas that Rotary has, mandated us to work on. We are going to be doing a lot around maternal health, basic education, literacy environment, and many more, a lot of things are going to be happening.
Some people are not aware of what Rotary is all about, so can you give us a little tip about being a Rotarian?
Rotary is all about service to humanity, being a Rotarian simply means that you are dedicated to serving humanity. In serving humanity you look at all nameless focus that rotary also focuses on, there is maternal and childbirth, there is water, there is environment, so many of them, so we focus on those areas and then serve humanity through them consistently.
We are the foot soldiers, we are closer to the people, and we know what their needs are. And being a Rotarian means we are positioned to help the public alleviate their suffering in those specific areas.
How long have you been a Rotarian?
I have been a Rotarian for more than 15 years, but before then I was an interactor which means I was a member of Rotary at the junior level in secondary school, then I moved from there and joined the community of Rotarian club, which for the ages of 19-29. So I joined and later on 29-30 I joined Rotary, so that’s how my journey has been.
Finally, what are the requirements for becoming a member?
Basically, people need to know Rotarians that can introduce them, you can go on our website or Rotary center, and state the fact that you want to be a Rotarian and then they are going to invite you, and when they invite you to come, they will make a couple of meetings, once you make that assessment, you will become a member. Rotary is not a hard organization to join like a lot of people think, it only requires you to come to fellowship with us, understand what we are doing, indicate your interest to access our compatibility, and then we take the journey from there.
