The biggest political news rocking Osun State right now is the big news of Senator Iyiola Omisore joining the 2026 Osun Governorship race.
The former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator lyiola Omisore, last Sunday declared his intention to run for 2026 Osun governorship election.
Omisore who has made several attempts to be the State Governor disclosed this via a teaser message on his official facebook page (Otunba lyiola Omisore).
“In the name of, The Father, The Son and, The Holy Ghost….
Osun State Renewed Hope begins by the year” he wrote.
This post has since been followed by campaign posters with All Progressives Congress logo.
His coming out came as a big surprise to many who didn’t see it coming.
Why did he decide to join the race, we asked his aides. Sources close to him say his decision was a collective action, as a result of pressures from notable Osun indigenes, professionals, politicians and patriots to come out and step up the pace of development in the state. He has started consultations. He is quite close to Pres. Tinubu and he was one of those who worked for Pres Tinubu’s victory in 2023. The President acknowledged this in his Acceptance Speech then.
Pres. Bola Tinubu commended Senator Iyiola Omisore and the entire members of the National Working Committee, and specially singled out the National Secretary of the APC then, Iyiola Omisore “and all who have worked with him, collating some forms and for his administrative competence to get the party to comply with the INEC requirement”.
“We thank you for a good job done and how you navigated the ship to get us to this destination. The ship did not sink or waiver. We anchored well on the President elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In joining the race, Senator Omisore is banking on his intimidating profile as a seasoned politician who has served in both the Executive and Legislative arm government.
Iyiola Ajani Omisore is a businessman, teacher,chartered engineer, and politician who served as Deputy Governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003. Subsequently, he served as a member of the Senate for Osun East from 2003 to 2011. He is a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress.
He is a remarkable example of a politician who successfully balances his political career with his profession as a Mechanical and Electrical Engineer. His commitment to his profession, combined with his empathy for humanity and good politics, makes him an inspiration to politicians around the country. He engages in varieties of encouraging practices that reflects his genuinty for humanity. Every January 1 each year, he visits Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital and donates several millions for the treatment of the less privileged. He has been doing this virtuous act for several years. He also engages in multiple scholarships to deserving people who cannot pursue their dreams as a result of the economy of the country.
As the former National Secretary of the All Progressive Congress, he contributed to the country’s transformation into a highly developed nation, focusing on long-term planning and transparency. Despite being a prominent political figure, he remains committed to his work as a Mechanical and Electrical Engineer with multiple degrees in Diploma&BSc Electrical, MSc Mechanical FTC Testing methods and PhD Engineering Finance. Senator Omisore, a Chartered Engineer began his Engineering career as a Project Engineer and later Project manager with Drake + Gordon UK Ltd; a Mechanical, Electrical Engineering and construction firm and Drake & skull Nigeria Ltd. Whilst in Drake & Skull, he was directly involved both as a Project/Commissioning Engineer and Project Manager in the following projects: Nineteen Nigerian Airfields including NAF base in Makurdi; Sokoto Rice Mills, Makurdi Rice Mills; Taraku Oil Mills; Onitsha Flour Mills; Eternit, Sapele, Bank of the North Headquarters, Kano; NTA/NTI, Kaduna; Federal Mortgage Bank, Lagos; Sokoto Teaching Hospital; Podium Secretariat, Port Harcourt; Immirungi Rural Electrification, Old Rivers State; Okpella Cement Factory and World Bank Assisted Projects.
Engineer Omisore left Drake & Skull Nigeria Ltd to establish his own company; CHRISORE ENGINEERING LTD; a Mechanical, Electrical Engineering and Construction Firm. Chrisore Engineering successfully executed the following projects: UACN Commercial Complex, Apapa; the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor’s residence including the residences of its 5 Deputies; Afribank Headquarters; Eko International Bank Headquarters; UACN Abuja Complex in addition to the Union Bank of Nigeria Headquarters; NNPC Housing Estates, British High Commission, Abuja, Unilever Apapa.
He later moved to Engineering Consultancy, Multi-Disciplinary firms; Breton Woods Institutions and formed Mechelec Consultants Ltd. Mechelec Consultants has been involved in the following projects: African Development Bank financed projects across the states; World Bank financed projects in Enugu, Kaduna, Niger, Sokoto, Bauchi, Kwara and Imo States; World Bank Health System Fund II in Lagos State; World Bank Assisted Lagos Urban Transportation Project, the Pakistani Suppliers’ Credit on Rural Electrification in Ondo and Niger States, Enugu State Multi-State Road Project; Ondo State Multi-State Road Project; Kano/Jigawa Multi-State Road Project; Ondo/Enugu IDF, Sokoto/Zamfara Multi- State Health Project; Ondo/Bauchi Multi-State Health Project; Ogun/Kaduna Multi-State Health Project; ADB/ADF Assisted Projects: Kwara Water Supply; Bauchi Water Supply; Delta Water Supply; Lagos Fishing Terminal; Nkalagu Cement Factory, NSPMC Proposed Factory in Jos; Ondo State Afforestation Project, TVEP Projects (proposed) in seven technical colleges (prototype) across the country.
After a long Engineering experience, Senator Omisore veered into partisan politics. He was elected first as a Deputy Governor (1999- 2003), Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2003-2011) and was until recently the National Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
According to a political analyst, this commitment not only makes him a better politician but also serves as a reminder that politics should not be the only focus of a public servant.
