The former Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) , Charles Soludo has charged the government on the rapid growing population of the country towards economy effectiveness and preparedness for the future for the offsprings.
Speaking at the annual The Platform conference, recently in Lagos, Soludo addressing the outgrowing population status from the economic perspective on the nation sustainability noted one of the ways to dig the country from poverty trap is to create opportunities for the unemployed to develop the labour force of the country.
He added that the economic structure can be changed through a new national business model that will include redesigning new ideas and plans to foster swift development.
He said: “By the time a child born in Nigeria and is 40 years of age, there will probably be 400 million Nigerians, at 80 years, there will probably be 752 million Nigerians. At that time I can imagine the four times the number of people today in Lagos. All that the people will need will be; food, water, medication, schools, hospitals, and they are going to need jobs. I want to talk about the future, are we really ready for the 400 million population?
“What I want to say is that if we want to change the economy then we must be able to change the underline institution which is key. Our focus is on wealth creation in the future.
We need a new national business model. By the estimated population, we are going to be the most populous state in the works among the top ten most populous countries.
“It takes more than faith to take delivery of economic restructuring. How prepared are we to meet the demand of the teeming population, which is risking to the economy” he said.
