First impressions are very telling, and while they might not always be correct, they can give you some idea of the kind of person you’re dealing with.
Here are a few red flags to look out for:
They talk down to you or are abrasiveÂ
If a potential boss is already speaking to you in a curt manner or is at all abrasive during the interview or introduction, this should be a serious warning of what’s to come.
If a person treats you this way so early on, it’s highly improbable that their attitude will change once you start work there and you might want to rethink that job opportunity.
You have incompatible working styles
Granted, everyone has different ways of managing their time and completing tasks and this should be appreciated. But, there are times when our individual working styles just don’t operate cohesively and this could lead to bigger problems down the road.
Look out for signs of micro-managing tendencies. If you get the opportunity, meet with a few colleagues to try suss out how your potential boss interacts with others and how subordinates respond to him or her.
Another red flag to watch out for is negative talk about a co-worker, which signals a toxic boss.
You can’t get a word in
In an interview scenario you should be doing most of the talking since the company is trying to get a sense of whether or not you’ll be a good fit, but if you find yourself in a situation where your potential manager is harping on about themselves or their accomplishments, an alarm bell should sound.
You want to know that your future boss is a listener and person who will consider your ideas and opinions.
