Top ENUGU Politicans Who Want To Be Gov.

Politics in Enugu State is gradually gathering momentum as discussions around the 2027 governorship election begin to dominate political conversations across the state. Although the election is still some time away, consultations, alliances and quiet political manoeuvring have already begun among politicians who believe the next contest could reshape the political direction of the Coal City State.

At the centre of the unfolding political developments is the incumbent governor, Peter Mbah, whose administration continues to generate both admiration and debate among residents. Many political observers believe the race for the Lion Building will largely revolve around whether the governor can secure a second term or whether a formidable challenger will emerge to test his political strength.

Across Enugu’s political landscape, several names are already being mentioned by citizens, political analysts and party insiders as individuals who may attempt to take the governorship seat in the next election. Some of them are familiar faces who contested the last election, while others are experienced political actors who have held important positions in government.

One of the most prominent figures frequently mentioned is Chijioke Edeoga, a veteran politician who played a major role in the 2023 governorship election in Enugu State.

Edeoga was the main challenger to Governor Peter Mbah during the 2023 election when he contested under the Labour Party. His candidacy generated strong grassroots momentum and he finished as the runner up in the election after securing significant support across several local government areas.

Before the governorship contest, Edeoga had already built a strong political profile. He served as a member of the House of Representatives representing Enugu East and Isi Uzo Federal Constituency and later held positions in the Enugu State government including Commissioner for Local Government Affairs.

Many political observers say his experience, political network and grassroots support still make him one of the most influential figures in Enugu politics. However recent political developments have complicated the situation. Edeoga has since moved closer to the governor politically and even supported the endorsement of Mbah for another term, a move that surprised many observers.

Despite that development some political watchers believe he still retains the political capacity to contest again if circumstances change.

Another name frequently mentioned in Enugu political circles is Dr. Chinyeaka Oha. Oha is a technocrat with deep experience in public finance and administration. He recently resigned from the position of Chairman, Governing Council of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUTECH). He also served as Director in some Federal Government ministries, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Power, said he was leaving on personal reasons.

He thanked Mbah for “the honour and privilege to serve the government and people of Enugu State in the capacity,” stressing that the appointment offered him the opportunity to contribute his quota to the growth and development of ESUTECH.

He previously served as Accountant General of Enugu State during the administration of former governor Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani. His career in public service earned him recognition as one of the technocrats who understood the financial structure of the state government.

Political reports indicate that Oha has been consulting widely with stakeholders and political leaders across Enugu State as he considers pursuing the governorship ambition again. Analysts say his consultations across the Nsukka political bloc suggest he is trying to build a broad political coalition ahead of the next election.

Supporters describe him as a disciplined administrator with strong knowledge of governance while critics argue that he would still need significant political machinery to defeat a sitting governor.

Another politician whose name continues to appear in discussions about Enugu’s future leadership is Uche Nnaji. Nnaji was the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 election.

Although he did not win the election many political observers believe he still has ambitions within the political structure of the state and may attempt another run if his party structures become stronger in Enugu. Some political stakeholders have even predicted that he may re enter the race depending on the political climate in the state.

Nnaji is widely known in Enugu political circles and has built influence through business and political networks. Supporters say he has strong connections within the federal political establishment which could play a role if he decides to run again.

Another political figure who has previously shown interest in the governorship race is Kanayo Graham-Burton Oguakwa. Oguakwa is a former member of the House of Representatives who represented the Aninri, Awgu and Oji River Federal Constituency.

He previously declared interest in the Enugu governorship race and has been active in politics for many years. His supporters believe his legislative experience and grassroots connection across parts of Enugu West Senatorial District could make him a contender if he decides to return to the governorship race.

In recent months another name that has surfaced in political discussions is Chris Okonkwo, a retired civil servant and former labour leader who has received endorsement from some socio political organisations ahead of the 2027 election.

Supporters say Okonkwo’s experience in public service and labour leadership gives him a deep understanding of administrative systems and governance. Political groups backing him argue that the state requires leadership driven by institutional knowledge and policy implementation.

Although he is still emerging in the governorship conversation political observers say endorsements from civil society groups and professional associations could help increase his visibility.

While these names continue to circulate in political discussions the political terrain in Enugu still appears largely favourable to Governor Peter Mbah.

Since assuming office in May 2023 the governor has embarked on several development projects that supporters say have changed the development narrative in the state.

Among the projects frequently mentioned by political leaders are the construction of Smart Green Schools across the wards in the state, development of primary healthcare centres in communities and major road infrastructure across urban and rural areas.

Supporters of the governor say these projects demonstrate a clear vision for development and could make it difficult for any challenger to defeat him in the next election.

Political endorsements for the governor have also begun to emerge from various parts of the state. Leaders from the Enugu East Senatorial District publicly declared him their preferred candidate for the next governorship election describing his leadership as transformative and progressive.

Traditional rulers, political leaders, youth groups and professionals who attended the meeting reportedly pledged their support for the governor’s re election regardless of the political party he chooses to run under.

Beyond the political class opinions among ordinary citizens remain mixed.

In markets such as Ogbete and Abakpa traders often discuss the visible infrastructure projects in the state. Some of them say the road constructions and development projects have improved economic activity.

A trader who identified himself as Emeka said many residents believe the governor came prepared for leadership and has already demonstrated strong administrative capacity.

Taxi drivers and civil servants also frequently discuss the government’s efforts in improving security and infrastructure.

However not everyone shares the same enthusiasm.

Some residents in parts of Nsukka and Awgu say economic hardship and rising living costs remain major issues that the government must address before the next election.

A teacher in Nsukka explained that many voters will carefully evaluate the administration’s performance before deciding whether the governor deserves another term.

A political analyst based in Enugu, Dr. Okey Ikechukwu, said the political atmosphere in the state will become clearer as the election approaches.

According to him, the strength of any challenger will depend largely on the alliances they are able to build across the three senatorial districts of the state.

He explained that incumbency, party structure and visible development projects usually play major roles in determining the outcome of governorship elections in Nigeria.

Ikechukwu said that another major factor that could influence the election is the governor’s alignment with the national ruling structure.

In Nigerian politics the relationship between state governments and the federal government often plays a crucial role in determining political outcomes. He said: “If Governor Mbah maintains strong political alliances at the national level it could significantly strengthen his chances in the next election

“At the same time the opposition will be looking for ways to build coalitions strong enough to challenge the incumbent”

Across Enugu State consultations are already taking place quietly among politicians and political stakeholders.

Community leaders, traditional rulers and political elders are expected to play important roles in shaping alliances ahead of party primaries.

Political observers believe the final list of governorship candidates may not fully emerge until closer to the election period when political calculations become clearer.

For now the names of Chijioke Edeoga, Chinyeaka Oha, Uche Nnaji, Kanayo Oguakwa and Chris Okonkwo continue to circulate in political conversations across the state.

Whether any of them will eventually mount a serious challenge to Governor Peter Mbah remains to be seen.

What is certain however is that the political atmosphere in Enugu is gradually entering another decisive phase.

As the months pass and political activities intensify the race for the Lion Building could become one of the most closely watched governorship contests in the South East.
