In a concerted effort to champion public health and sustainable development, the WASH FOR LIFE initiative has made significant strides in promoting water and sanitation hygiene within secondary schools. With a focus on educating students on proper hand-washing and hygiene practices, the project has emerged as a beacon of hope for communities striving for a healthier future, as was demonstrated on March 28, 2024 by the Rotary and Rataract Clubs of Akowonjo
The WASH FOR LIFE project, aptly named to symbolize its commitment to promoting Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH), is driven by a noble purpose: to improve public health and enhance the overall well-being of communities. By instilling proper water handling and hygiene education in secondary schools, the initiative seeks to empower students with the knowledge and tools to lead healthier lives and for this project, the beneficiaries were Millennium Secondary School, Egbeda and Community Junior Secondary Akowonjo.
The objectives of the project encompass a wide spectrum of initiatives aimed at fostering a culture of cleanliness and hygiene, educate students and teachers alike on proper hand-washing and hygiene practices, help students understand the significance of proper sanitation practices and their contribution to a healthier environment, prevent the spread of water-borne diseases and improve overall hygiene and to foster student-led WASH initiatives for long-term impact.
Commenting on the initiative, the President of the Rotary Club of Akowonjo highlighted the significance of Water and Sanitation Hygiene as one of Rotary’s key focus areas. She emphasized her role as President in ensuring the Rotary Club of Akowonjo’s unwavering commitment to this goal, stating, “Water and Sanitation Hygiene is a cornerstone of Rotary’s humanitarian efforts. As President, I am dedicated to leveraging our club’s resources and expertise to support initiatives like WASH FOR LIFE, which have a profound impact on the health and well-being of our community.”
Rotaract Collaboration: Echoing the sentiment of partnership and collaboration, the President of the Rotaract Club of Akowonjo, Sunday Oluremi, expressed his excitement at partnering with the Rotary Club of Akowonjo to execute the impactful WASH FOR LIFE exercise in the Egbeda-Akowonjo environs. He remarked, “As Rotaractors, we are thrilled to join hands with our Rotary counterparts in driving positive change within our community. Together, we can amplify our impact and make a meaningful difference in promoting water and sanitation hygiene for all.”
Highlight of the Activities Lectures, demonstrations, and the distribution of hand-wash were among the key activities undertaken as part of the WASH FOR LIFE initiative. Benefiting over 900 individuals across both schools, including students, teachers, and administrative staff, the project has set a precedent for excellence in promoting health and hygiene within educational institutions.
The impact of the WASH FOR LIFE initiative is far-reaching, with improved health outcomes and enhanced knowledge ensuring a reduced incidence of water-borne diseases. Furthermore, the project’s emphasis on environmental sustainability has paved the way for hygiene practices that prevent pollution of water sources, safeguarding the health of communities for generations to come. Access to hand-wash for students and staff further underscores the commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment within the school premises.
As the WASH FOR LIFE initiative continues to make strides in promoting water and sanitation hygiene, its legacy of empowerment and enlightenment serves as a testament to the transformative power of education and community engagement.
