Notable among the special guests invited and honoured at the colourful thanksgiving ceremony of Christ Ambassador Cathedral, Pen Cinema Special District, Agege, was the Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Hon. Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, who joined members of the church and other guests in celebrating the occasion.

His presence at the event provided an opportunity for him to felicitate with members of the church and interact with residents and members of the community.

Having spent about one year in office as the Agege Local Government boss, Hon. Obasa in a chat with City People Reporter, JAMIU ABUBAKAR (08085185886) spoke about his administration’s activities and some of the projects and empowerment initiatives undertaken within the period. According to him, the administration has focused on areas including education, roads, street lighting, infrastructure and economic empowerment, while pledging to do more in the years ahead.

The local government chairman shared his views on the importance of religious institutions in promoting morality, peaceful coexistence and community development.

In his message to the people of Agege, he urged them to remain patient and continue to collaborate with his administration in the task of developing the community.

He also spoke about the political lessons he learnt from his father, particularly the importance of bravery, hard work, directness and putting the interests of the people first. Below are excerpts:

How do you feel coming to the church to rejoice with them today?

It’s really great to join residents of the local government in celebrating a very important part of their faith. For us, it’s to bring all people of faith together. We are all here to move the local government forward. We continue to work together. Institutions like this are very important for the community in moving it forward and make sure that our people are on the right morality character and as a whole, as a community, we all live together to move forward.

As a community leader, what message do you have for members of this church?

It’s to continue to follow the tenets of the church, of the faith and what tenets of Christianity, which is all about morality, good character, making sure that we live in peace and harmony, regardless of where we come from, regardless of our religion, we’re all able to work together and live together in peace.

You’ve spent one year in office. How is the experience like?

It’s really exciting to be able to make an impact within our community and that’s the goal for me. As a community, I’ve lived all my life and be able to make an impact and move it forward and make it much forward as a whole.

I understand a lot has been done. Can you just give us a bit of what you’ve done within that one year?

17 school school blocks have been renovated. We have about 18 to 20 roads done.

We have 600 streetlights installed, 3km of walls been set. About 15 various schools, magazine centres have been set up. So it’s a whole lot we’ve done.

We empowered about 4,000 residents, about 36,000 residents have been given a bit of food palliatives, economic palliatives to help them. So it’s a whole lot we are doing and we still want to do more coming into our future plans for our administration.

Your message for the people of Agege in general?

My message would be for them to be patient, to continue to let us collaborate, work together. The future is really bright for us and if we continue to work together, we’ll achieve our goals.

Finally, your dad, what have you been able to learn from his political wisdom ? What have you taken after him?

To learn bravery, to learn to work hard, be very plain and be very direct about your intentions. Care about the people, I think that comes first as well.

Care about the party people, the community people. If that comes first, all other things follow and you’re able to reach your goal as a politician. If the people come first, they will naturally love you, follow you and lead you to your destination.
