Recently, City People got a respected Islamic scholar, the Sheikh of Lagos to tell us more about the significance of Ramadan, as a time of reflection, fasting and renewal of faith.

Muslims look forward to Ramadan as an opportunity to deepen their connection with Allah, strengthen their bond with family and friends and show compassion towards those in need.

According to Sheikh Abdur Rahman Lawal of Nadwat Global Assembly, who usually organise the all white Lateef-Ul-Akbar-il-A-Azam, at the mainbowl of Tafawa Balewa Square, Race Course, Lagos,

“Ramadan is important to all Muslims. I will tell you the reason. As a Muslim, the month of Ramadan is a blessed month. It is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims around the world, always anticipate look forward to this blessed month for the opportunity to observe fasting, which is the 4th of the 5 fundamental pillars of Islam faith.

The arrival and the emergence of the month of Ramadan is usually based on the appearance of the new crescent, that is the crescent for the month of Ramadan.

As we all know that Muslim faith is regulated by the Lunary calculation. So it is in the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, that the month of Ramadan occur, and the Fasting therein is one of the fundamental pillars of the Islamic faith. Muslims have been commanded to fast in the month of Ramadan. Fasting has been prescribed upon Muslims. It enjoins the Muslims the world over the fast so that can attain righteousness in the God consciousness. In Quran Chapter 2 Verse 182, fasting was prescribed upon Muslims.

Muslims world over, must observe fasting in the month of Ramadan without excuses to anyone, except for those who might be on a journey or due to illness. Those are 2 people who are exempted. Or in a more Secondary exemption for those who are aged or for some prognant woman who might not be able to go ahead with the fasting and as well as the breast feeding mothers.

These are the conditions that Allah started for us to be able to attain God consciousness in his righteousness.

So, for those who are capable of fasting it is good for them to fast but if they think their fasting may aggravate their illness or conditions, Allah says there is a way for them to repay back. That is redemption. Or feeding the needy man, for each of the mistake. That is why you see that during  Ramadan there are a lot of people doing packages, cooking, dishing out food. A lot of charities abound in the blessed month of Ramadan.

So, the significance of Ramadan in a nutshell or put succintly is to attain  Righteousness and God-Consciousness.
