When Gov Uba Sani hosted media practitioners in Kaduna

by Asabe Ndoma

It was a gathering of veteran journalists and media practitioners who had come together on the invitation of Governor Uba Sani to break the Ramadan fast (Iftar) with him at Kashim Ibrahim House, the seat of Government.

Speaking at the occasion, the Governor cautioned journalists against some politicians, he described as latter-day activists, whom he accused of attempts to undermine Nigeria’s democracy for their own political interest.

These politicians, whom he described as” latter-day activists”, engage in “activism” only when Government policies and decisions do not favour them

He warned journalists to remain vigilant and resist attempts by such politicians to destabilise the democratic process. Journalists played a historic role in Nigeria’s struggle for democracy and should not allow the sacrifices made during that period to be wasted.

“When we were in the struggle, as civil rights activists, we relied mostly on journalists. Most of them lost their freedom, and some even lost their lives, when we were fighting for Democracy “.

Uba Sani said it would be impossible to discuss the growth of Democracy in Nigeria without acknowledging the role or contributions of journalists during military rule.

“Nigerians cannot talk today without the contributions of journalists, so you have to be vigilant about this category of politicians who are conflict merchants “Gov Uba Sani said.

He called on media Practitioners to scrutinise the activities of politicians who now portray themselves as activists, despite their past alliances with undemocratic regimes.

He also used the occasion to highlight key achievements of his administration. He said his government has extended developmental projects to all 23 local government areas in the state as part of efforts to promote equity and balance development.

Speakers at the gathering commended the administration’s inclusive governance approach and progress in restoring peace and stability in the state.
