Veteran filmmaker Tunde Kelani is back with a brand-new movie titled Cordelia. The film is based on a story written by renowned playwright Professor Femi Osofisan and adapted for the screen by Bunmi Ajiboye. Cordelia features a strong cast, including Omowunmi Dada as Cordelia, William Benson, Yvonne Jegede, Keppy Ekpeyong, and Kelechi Udegbe.
The movie tells the story of a university professor who hides a student during a military coup—unaware that she’s the daughter of a man wrongly accused of leading the coup. As the danger around them grows, the professor is forced to choose between doing what’s safe and doing what’s right.The film is a powerful story about courage, conscience and justice.
In this interview during the press conference unveiling the new movie, actress Yvonne Jegede, who plays Remi, expressed her excitement getting to be featured in the movie. She talked about how she felt after reading the script, how she prepared for her role, and what it was like working with Tunde Kelani. She also shares how she brought something new and exciting to the character.
“When I read the script, I saw my character’s name was Remi. And I saw the kind of personality Remi had. I knew it was a personality I had interpreted before — an angry wife. But when you have to work with someone like TK, you always make sure that even if you’re playing the same character again and again, you’re interpreting it differently. You adapt one habit or one vice or something and just make that character stand out from all the others you’ve played.
“So when I read it, I knew I had to do something completely different. Not just shouting like we do in movies. Not just being angry and shouting to show that you’re angry. This was a character I had to really wear. Because my husband in the movie is obviously very big — bigger than I am. I’m like this high, you know — that kind of thing. But I had to make him know that there’s a fire wife in the house. She swallowed it all. You can be whatever it is out there in school, but when you’re in this house, I am your wife, and you have to respect me.
“So I had to create a character where I chest out when I walk, so you know trouble is coming. I was just excited to bring something different to the set. And like they both say, TK will let you do anything you want to do. He will let you do whatever you want to do. So, it was a blast. Thank you so much, sir. Thank you.
