My Journey Through Hormonal Imbalance, Healing & Hope
BY MARIAM ADEDOYIN
It began with something small—a hair on my chin. Something I had never noticed before. At first, I thought it was nothing. But as a woman in her 30s, with no children yet and a deep desire for motherhood, I listened to my body. I Googled. I panicked. I called a doctor friend.
He gently mentioned the possibility of hirsutism—a condition marked by excess male-pattern hair growth in women, often tied to hormonal imbalance or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). And that was when my journey began.
The Diagnosis I Didn’t Expect: After finally booking a proper medical check-up, the truth became clear: I was overweight, had elevated blood sugar, and my body was producing excessive androgens—male hormones. The cause? Hormonal imbalance.
Suddenly, the dots began to connect. The unwanted facial hair, the weight gain, the acne on my face, chest and back, the fatigue, sadness, anxiety, and the fear that I was losing myself—both physically and mentally. I had entered a silent health battle that so many women are unknowingly fighting.
THE MENTAL TOLL OF HORMONAL CHAOS:
Beyond the physical changes, my mental health suffered the most. I didn’t feel beautiful. My skin was breaking out, my clothes were tighter, and my reflection was unfamiliar. I smiled on the outside but felt overwhelmed, frustrated, and confused within. This is the part many women never talk about: Hormonal imbalance doesn’t just affect your body—it challenges your identity.
TAKING BACK CONTROL: ONE STEP AT A TIME
Thankfully, I had a supportive doctor and—most importantly—I had discipline.
I started with the basics: I changed my diet completely. I practiced calorie deficit. I replaced processed food with vegetables and fruits. I cut down alcohol drastically. I eliminated sugar-laden drinks like soda e.t.c. I reduced my carbs and focused on protein in moderate amounts. i started walking and doing light home exercises.
In just 7 weeks, I went from 83kg to 78kg. The glow returned. My skin began to clear. My smile came back—and my test results started to improve. Yesterday, I saw my doctor again. His words? “You’re doing so well. Your results are showing real progress.”
SO MANY WOMEN,
ONE STRUGGLE:
What shocked me most was discovering I’m not alone. More and more women today are dealing with hormonal issues—hirsutism, PCOS, fertility challenges, insulin resistance, unexplained weight gain—and many don’t even know the root cause.
Could it be environmental factors? Could it be the processed foods we now normalize? Or perhaps modern stress levels and lifestyle habits?
We need more conversations about this.
A Message to Every Woman Reading This: Your health is your power. Don’t ignore the signs—no matter how small. Whether it’s that extra hair, sudden weight gain, unusual fatigue, skin changes, irregular periods, or just a gut feeling—listen to your body.
