Alhaji Bashy Kuti is a big boy in Ibadan. He is a leading fashion designer and the creative mind behind BKK Ultimo Fashion House in Ibadan. He is not just a celebrity fashion designer, he is also a socialite. His wife, Bisi Kuti is a fabric merchant at the Gbagi Market in Ibadan. She is also popular on the social scene. They have been married for over 24 years.
A few weeks back, Bisi was seen with Alhaja Jade Qudus, another fabric merchant at the popular Gbagi market, when at the Alubaukudi’s held their party inside the Conference Hall of the University of Ibadan. City People’s Assistant Society Editor, ABIOLA ORISILE was there and she had an exclusive interview with her during which she spoke about her marriage and life as Bashy’s wife.
Who is Mrs Bashy Kuti?
I am the wife of a top Ibadan fabric merchant, Bashy Kuti. I also sell fabrics in the popular Gbagi market.
How long have you been selling fabrics?
I have been selling fabrics for as long as I can remember. My mother was a fabric merchant. I have been selling fabrics for over 20 years. It is a family business. My mother owns Bolade Stores, but she has retired.
Where do you hail from?
I am from Ijebu.
How long have you been married to Bashy?
I have been married to Bashy for 24 years, to the glory of God and we are still counting.
What has sustained your marriage for 24 years?
Love, God and Prayers have sustained my marriage for over 24 years.
It is not easy being married to a celeb, what is the secret of sustaining a celebrity wedding?
The main advice I will give to the young ones who are just getting married is Patience. They have to be patient. You need to be patient. Trust your husband and never listen to hearsay. You have to trust your husband to sustain a celebrity marriage. It takes a lot of patience to be married to a celebrity.
Have you ever been called and given information about your hubby?
Severally, even recently exactly a month ago, somebody gave me a call, telling me about my husband. I just told her Thank you. I don’t listen to hearsay. My husband is highly responsible and he takes care of his home. His home comes first to him.
When you are told something unsavoury about him, what do you tell them?
I tell them thank you. Somebody sent me a text few weeks ago and I told her “Falana Gbo Tie” (stop feeding me with stories). You have to know that some people would feed you with lies because they want you to fight your husband.
When you see your husband beside a lady, what do you do?
I just smile, as it doesn’t matter to me. I know the kind of husband I married and those things don’t matter to me.
What makes you like Bashy Kuti?
He is kind, generous and Goldly.
How did you meet your husband?
I met him when I was very young. I was just getting close to 20 years. He is much more older and I was innocent and naive. He met me at “Felele” and walked up to me saying “Come, where do you stay”. I ran away, but met him again and he said “I like you. Where do you stay? I told him, I live behind this street. My mother’s house was right behind his Aunty House, but he didn’t know me. To the glory of God, the rest is history.
The market seems to be flooded with different lace, how do we know good fabrics
All the fabrics are good. It is just that one is more expensive than the other. This is from China but it is cool.
You are very educated, can we go to the schools you attended?
I went to St. Annes in Ibadan and Olabisi Onabanjo University, where I read Mass Communication.
You have been selling fabrics for over 20 years, how would you rate the market?
It is a very good business, you just have to know the rudiments.
You have a very good skin, what is the secret?
Nothing. I just stick to one cream.
What do you call your husband?
Darling and I have been calling him that for years.
Who is your best friend?
My daughter and Alhaja Jade Qudus sitting beside me.
But she is older than you?
Yes, but I love everything about her. We understand each other. She is a good woman and she sells fabrics too. I have known her for over 20 years and I call her Aunty.
