Saturday, May 17, 2025, was a truly special day as the children of Madam Victoria Abibat Mayomi came together to honour their beloved mother on the occasion of her 85th birthday. It was a grand celebration of a life well-lived — one filled with sacrifice, faith, resilience, and love.

To make the day memorable, the Mayomi children invited friends, family, and associates to join in thanking God for sparing their mother’s life and keeping her strong through the years. The event, which took place at the elegant Grandeur Pavilion in Oregun, Lagos, was a colourful affair — the very definition of a classic Owambe party. From the dazzling aso-ebi to heartfelt tributes and spirited dancing, it was a day of joy and thanksgiving.

The Matriarch and Her Legacy

Madam Victoria is blessed with eight wonderful children:

Mrs. Olubunmi Joanne Fabunmi

Ms. Kehinde Patience Mayomi

Ms. Taiye Sharon Mayomi

Mrs. Omolara Olowookere

Mr. Adesayo Mayomi

Mrs. Temitayo Adesayo

Mr. Akinyemi Omotere Mayomi

Mrs. Busola Akinyemi Omotere

Each of them played a significant role in celebrating their mother, who has been a pillar of strength and discipline in their lives. A few of them took turns to pay glowing tributes before the cake was cut and the dance floor opened. Queen Madiva Band lit up the atmosphere, ensuring there was no dull moment.

A Daughter’s Emotional Tribute — Mrs. Omolara Olowookere Speaks

The last daughter of the celebrant, Mrs. Omolara Olowookere, shared an emotional tribute to her mother:

> “I try not to get emotional whenever I talk about my mom. Those who know me well understand how deeply I love and respect her — just as I did my late dad.

Growing up, we called her ‘Iya Deeper’, ‘Margaret Thatcher’, ‘Iya Lands’, ‘Iya Women Affairs’ — titles earned from the various places she worked and the strong character she displayed.

I was the mischievous child, always on the receiving end of her discipline. I often joke that I lived at the mercy of her cane. But today, I’m grateful. Because when I look at the woman I’ve become — and at my own children — I realise the value of her firm hand.

She raised us to know and serve God. It was never optional. Whether things were good or bad, her answer was always: ‘Thank God.’ That grounding in faith is what has kept us all going till today.

One scripture she often quoted, even in Yoruba, was Romans 12:20–21 — reminding us to overcome evil with good. That lesson has shaped how I handle life’s trials.

Thank you, Mommy, for the discipline, the love, and most importantly, for showing us the way of the Lord. You are a rare gem. We love you dearly.”

A Firstborn’s Homage — Mrs. Olubunmi Joanne Fabunmi Shares

The first daughter and eldest child, Mrs. Olubunmi Joanne Fabunmi, also gave a heartfelt address:

> “My mother began her journey as a fashion designer, but her dreams didn’t stop there. She pursued education diligently, earning a National Diploma and building a successful career in public service. She served in Kwara and Kogi States under the Ministry of Lands and Survey, and later at the Ministry of Women Affairs, where she worked closely with the governor’s wife.

She is a goal-getter — determined, focused, and resilient. Even in the face of life’s storms, she stands strong.

We older ones got the strict version of her — you dared not sit improperly or flout instructions. Her discipline reset you in one go — what we call ifotimogiri.

Though she loved fashion, she eventually found deeper purpose in her walk with God. Born a Muslim, she loved Christianity early on, sang in the ECWA choir in the North, and later joined the Anglican Church. Her spiritual journey led her to Deeper Life Bible Church, where she became a fervent believer — hence the name, Iya Deeper.

Her faith is unshakable. She once lost a daughter who was 38 years old, but stood tall, rooted in scripture, offering comfort rather than needing it.

Mama treats everyone with love — biological child or not. Her goodness often goes beyond comprehension. Some may misunderstand it, but she gives from the heart.

Today, we celebrate her not because we have more than enough, but because we have every reason to say, ‘Thank you, Lord.’ Despite all odds, she remains a beacon of light and strength.

Mama, thank you. For all you’ve done, for all you are. You are our Deborah — a mother in Israel, a mother indeed. May the good Lord continue to bless and strengthen you.”

A Celebration of Grace

The event was more than a birthday party — it was a tribute to legacy, a celebration of values passed down, and a thanksgiving to God who has kept a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother for 85 impactful years.

As the music played and guests danced, one thing was clear: Madam Victoria Abibat Mayomi’s life is a testimony — of faith, of family, and of fulfilled purpose. Her children rose to call her blessed — and rightly so.
