Few luxury automobiles command as much attention as a Rolls-Royce. Whether it is a Cullinan SUV gliding through the streets of Lagos, a Ghost parked at the entrance of a five-star hotel, or a Phantom arriving at a celebrity event, the British luxury brand has become one of the biggest status symbols among Nigeria’s wealthy elite. In recent years, more entertainers, fashion entrepreneurs, socialites and business personalities have embraced the prestigious automobile, making it one of the most talked-about luxury vehicles on Nigerian roads.
Founded in 1904 by Charles Rolls and Henry Royce in the United Kingdom, Rolls-Royce built its reputation on producing handcrafted luxury automobiles that combine engineering excellence with unmatched comfort. For decades, the company supplied vehicles to royalty, presidents, captains of industry and global celebrities. Its slogan, “The Best Car in the World,” became synonymous with luxury, exclusivity and prestige.
The brand’s modern renaissance came after it became part of the BMW Group in the early 2000s. New models such as the Phantom, Ghost, Wraith, Dawn, Spectre and especially the Cullinan SUV helped introduce Rolls-Royce to a younger generation of wealthy buyers across the world. The Cullinan, launched in 2018, quickly became one of the company’s best-selling models because it combined the luxury of a limousine with the practicality of an SUV.
Although Rolls-Royce cars have been seen in Nigeria for decades, they were largely owned by traditional rulers, top politicians, industrialists and a handful of business magnates. It was not until the late 2010s and the early 2020s that the brand began appearing more frequently in the garages of entertainers, fashion entrepreneurs, music stars and social media personalities. Today, spotting a Rolls-Royce in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt is no longer unusual, especially at high-profile weddings, movie premieres, concerts and luxury social events.
One reason behind the surge is the rapid growth of Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Afrobeats has become a global export, Nollywood continues to expand internationally, and many fashion entrepreneurs, digital creators and event promoters have built highly profitable businesses. As their earnings increased, many sought luxury automobiles that matched their new status.
Another factor is the growing market for certified pre-owned luxury vehicles. While a brand-new Rolls-Royce can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, many Nigerian buyers acquire carefully maintained foreign-used models imported from Europe, the Middle East and North America. This has made ownership relatively more accessible for wealthy buyers compared to ordering factory-fresh vehicles.
Social media has also played a significant role. Instagram, TikTok and YouTube have transformed luxury cars into lifestyle statements. Every new vehicle delivery quickly becomes a trending topic, attracting millions of views and thousands of comments. For celebrities whose brands depend on visibility, a Rolls-Royce often serves as both personal transportation and a marketing asset.
The popularity of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan has further accelerated the trend. Nigerian roads, with their varying conditions, make SUVs more practical than traditional luxury sedans. Buyers enjoy the commanding driving position, spacious interior and advanced technology while still enjoying the prestige associated with the Rolls-Royce name.
Among Nigerians publicly associated with Rolls-Royce ownership or use are music stars, business figures and fashion entrepreneurs. Public reports and social media posts have linked personalities such as Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Don Jazzy, Obi Cubana, Cubana Chief Priest, Jowizaza, Mompha, E-Money, Seyi Vodi and Isaac Fayose with various Rolls-Royce models over the years. Other prominent Nigerians have also been photographed with the luxury brand either as owners or frequent users for business and ceremonial occasions, reflecting its growing popularity among the country’s affluent class.
Luxury automobile dealers say inquiries about Rolls-Royce models have increased significantly over the last few years. According to dealers, many customers specifically request the Cullinan and Ghost because they combine everyday usability with unmistakable prestige.

A Lagos-based luxury automobile dealer said many buyers no longer ask whether a Rolls-Royce is expensive before making inquiries. “Today’s luxury buyer is looking beyond transportation. They want a vehicle that reflects success, attracts attention and holds its value. The Rolls-Royce brand delivers all three,” he said.
Another dealer explained that social media has become one of their biggest marketing platforms. “Every time a celebrity posts a new Rolls-Royce, we receive fresh calls from potential buyers asking about availability, specifications and pricing. That level of influence has changed the luxury automobile market,” he said.
Some dealers also note that Nigerian buyers are becoming more knowledgeable about specifications, requesting bespoke interiors, customized paint finishes and personalized features that were once associated only with buyers in Europe and the Middle East.
For many celebrities, the attraction goes beyond luxury. The vehicle has become part of their personal branding. A fashion entrepreneur remarked, “When you build a premium brand, every detail matters. Your office, your appearance and even the car you arrive in all send a message.”
An entertainer who recently upgraded to a luxury SUV added, “It’s not just about showing wealth. It’s about rewarding years of hard work and enjoying the fruits of success.”
Business owners also argue that a luxury automobile can reinforce confidence when dealing with high-end clients. “Some of our customers expect excellence in everything we do. Driving a premium vehicle complements the image we have built over the years,” one entrepreneur said.
Yet, not everyone views the growing fascination with Rolls-Royce the same way. Some Nigerians admire the vehicles as symbols of ambition and success. “Seeing young entrepreneurs drive these cars tells people that success is possible through hard work and determination,” a Lagos resident said.
Others believe the trend reflects the growing global influence of Nigerian entertainment. “Afrobeats and Nollywood are producing international stars. It’s natural that their lifestyles now resemble those of celebrities in America, Europe and the Middle East,” another resident observed.
There are also critics who question the timing of such luxury purchases amid economic hardship. “People are struggling with inflation and rising living costs, so these displays of wealth often generate mixed reactions. Some admire them, while others believe more attention should be given to investments that create jobs,” another respondent said.
Automobile analysts, however, argue that luxury vehicle purchases represent only a tiny fraction of the Nigerian automobile market. They note that the majority of Nigerians continue to focus on affordable transportation, while luxury brands cater to a very small but financially powerful segment.
Industry observers also point to the expansion of luxury dealerships, specialist mechanics and detailing centres across Lagos and Abuja as evidence that demand for premium automobiles is increasing. Businesses that provide ceramic coating, vehicle protection films, bespoke upholstery and luxury automobile servicing have all benefited from the rise in high-end vehicle ownership.
Insurance companies have equally developed specialised packages for exotic automobiles, while logistics firms have improved vehicle importation processes, making it easier for wealthy Nigerians to acquire luxury brands from overseas.
Despite the impressive growth, owning a Rolls-Royce remains a costly undertaking. Beyond the purchase price are insurance, import duties, maintenance, genuine spare parts and fuel costs. Servicing requires specialised expertise, and replacement parts often have to be sourced directly from international suppliers.
Even so, demand appears to be holding firm. Industry players say the Rolls-Royce has evolved beyond being merely a luxury car. It has become a symbol of achievement, influence and personal success among Nigeria’s elite.
As more celebrities, entrepreneurs and business leaders continue to embrace the iconic British marque, the sight of a Phantom, Ghost or Cullinan cruising through Lagos traffic has become increasingly common. While opinions remain divided over the growing appetite for ultra-luxury vehicles, one thing is clear: for many of Nigeria’s biggest names, owning a Rolls-Royce is no longer simply about getting from one destination to another. It is about making a statement, celebrating success and joining an exclusive club whose appeal continues to grow despite the country’s challenging economic realities.
