The quest for a new Alaafin of Oyo has gained momentum as the Ladigbolu Royal Family is calling for a new selection process. They emphasize the importance of following the traditional Ifa divination. This call comes after the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III on April 22, 2022, which has left the throne empty.
In a statement released on Thursday and signed by Akinade Ladigbolu, the royal family criticized the ongoing process. They argued that it deviated from established Yoruba traditions and warned against any attempts to bypass the traditional oracle. The family stated that only Ifa divination should guide the choice of the new ruler to preserve the integrity of the Alaafin’s position.
The controversy surrounding the selection process intensified when a faction of the Oyo kingmakers, known as the Oyomesi, filed a lawsuit against Governor Seyi Makinde. The kingmakers sought to prevent the governor from rejecting Prince Lukuman Gbadegesin, whom they claim to have unanimously selected in September 2023. This lawsuit has led to tensions between the kingmakers and the state government, which has suggested the need for a new selection process.
The Ladigbolu family has strongly opposed any alternative methods. They state that such deviations would undermine the Yoruba tradition and have long-term negative consequences for Oyo. They have called on the Yoruba community worldwide to support their stance against what they describe as a threat to traditional values.
