Not many know that Mrs. Temitope Alade does other things than just being a fashion designer. She is an activist that campaigns for women empowerment, a teacher of fashion design at the Peter Akinola Foundation Abeokuta and she is also the only Internal Verifier for Fashion for the City and Guilds of London Institute. And she combines all of these with being a wife and a mother.
Last week, she came to City People Gbagada and spoke to City People’s Adeola Fagbiye about what shes been up to of late.
What have you been up to in the last one year?
A lot has happened. You know I’m a very busy person, I am always looking for challenges here and there. I’m combining two major things, I’m a fashion designer and I’m still running my clothing line but I’ve shifted totally to ready to wear, all our clients see what they like and they buy it. Its cheaper, and its good for the industry because more people are wearing our clothes and then the other part of me is the academic part. I’m a Lecturer and the H.O.D of the Department of Fashion and Creative Arts at Peter Akinola Foundation, Abeokuta. I’ve been working there for 6 years and. I’m also on the academic board of the institution.
“I’ve moved from being just a passionate fashion designer to being a seasoned fashion educationist”
Lately, I was appointed to consult for NABTEB National Board For Technical Education in Nigeria, which for me, is a promotion. I’m very happy to talk about that. I still run my fashion academy in Magodo which is Ibile Vogue Academy and one of the things we’ve been able to achieve this year is that we are now, a centre that writes the NABTEB examination. Before now our students write and take their exams as external students? but now we are a centre that now write the exams.
A lot has happened this year. I still work with City and Guilds of London Institute as an Internal Verifier for fashion, I am the first and presently the only one, I’ve won a couple of awards this year. One of the most important to me is being recognized as one of the most influential lecturers by my students on campus, I got the award this year as one of the most influential lecturers because I believe that you can’t lead without influence. Influence is what makes you lead successfully. For this years I’ve not gone for any international shows, I got 3 invitations but I couldn’t go because I’ve got training with a German. I’ve also been able to achieve a lot. I’m now a certified Pedagogy and Delatics. It’s a training for TVET which is Technical and Vocational Education Training.
It’s a training for those in the technical and vocational field and I’m one of the most qualified technical and vocation educationist in the country as at today.
So, the German government came in to train us. It is a sponsored programme. So, I was able to achieve that this year. I’ve moved from being just a passionate fashion designer to being a seasoned fashion educationist.
