On the back of turning 30, Goal has taken a look at nine iconic moments from Luis Suarez and his incredible career, from firing Uruguay to the Copa America to winning the Golden Shoe…
Suarez enjoyed great success at Ajax, winning the Dutch Cup in 2010 before clinching the Eredivisie the following year. But without a doubt, the main highlight from his time in the Netherlands was the 2009-10 campaign, in which he scored a whopping 49 goals in all competitions.
Although he scored 49 times for Ajax, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa was the moment Suarez truly became a star. He scored three goals as Uruguay reached the semi-finals of the biggest competition in football, losing to the Netherlands 3-2.
And Suarez followed up his impressive efforts at the 2010 World Cup by finding the back of the net four times as Uruguay lifted the 2011 Copa America – their first since 1995.
Suarez scored three goals en route to Liverpool winning the 2012 League Cup – his only trophy during his time at the club. It was the Reds’ first piece of silverware since 2006 and it remains their last cup win to date.
The marksman enjoyed more glory with his country when he scored twice in an 8-0 mauling of Tahiti in the Confederations Cup in 2013, surpassing Diego Forlan as Uruguay’s all-time top goalscorer.
Despite missing the start of the 2013-14 campaign through suspension, Suarez managed to notch 31 goals in just 33 Premier League games as Liverpool narrowly missed out on their first league crown since 1990.
With score balanced at 1-1 against Juventus, Suarez popped up to make it 2-1 to Barcelona in the 2015 Champions League final. The Blaugrana went on to win 3-1 to clinch a special treble in the forward’s debut campaign at the club.
Suarez followed up his stunning maiden season at Barcelona by scoring 40 league goals in 2015-16, winning the Golden Shoe ahead of the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo.
And another magnificent achievement was to come as Suarez scored his 100th goal for Barcelona against Athletic Club in 2017 in just his 120th appearance.
