It was a mammoth crowd that gathered at the People’s Democratic Party secretariat, Biket Junction, Ikirun-Road, on Tuesday 29th May, 2018, where a prominent aspirant and Mutual Benefits Assurance Chairman, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi had gone to officially make known his intention to contest the September 22nd guber election, under PDP.
Ogunbiyi is among the 23 aspirants that will slog it out in the party’s primaries ahead of the coming election. The event, which had in attendance PDP leaders and Exco members from across the length and breadth of Osun State, had clearly shown that Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi is a very popular aspirant and the candidate to beat in the general election if given the party’s ticket.
Some of the party leaders and Exco include Hon. Adesoji Adaguodo (Osun PDP Chairman) Elder Sunday Abefe Atilade; Saka Atunmi; Pharmacist Idiat Adeyemi; Alhaja Afusat Ajoke; Hon. Ajimobi’s Femi; Paul Olakunle; Alhaji Muda; Barr. Dosu Babatunde; Comrade Bamidele; Hon. Tunde Abesi; Alhaji Remi Arogundade; Adesuyi Oyetunde; Barr. wale OjoSanmi Ogunyemi; Mrs. Wunmi Otunla; Niyi Adeyemi just to mention but a few out of the party executives from all the 30 local government in the state.
To show his readiness, while addressing the party leadership and his political admirers at the event, Ogunbiyi revealed how prepared is he’s for the race and his commitment to the party. He donated a 6o seater bus to the party in the state.
With his official declaration and launching of his campaign office at Ogo-Oluwa area of the state’s capital, Osogbo, it has become crystal clear that the boardroom guru and a man of impeccable character, Akin Ogunbiyi is not ready to leave any stone unturned in achieving his dream of ruling Osun State as executive governor.
His coming into the race has raised the bar, because of his antecedents as a successful businessman and a man of excellent character . What Ogunbiyi is bringing on board, according to him, is his wealth of experience from the private sector, having built into a globally recognised entity, his conglomerate Mutual Benefits Assurance. All these coupled with his rich C.V are the reasons Akin Ogunbiyi has been described as a “The Game Changer” in Osun political circle. What is also going to work for Akin Ogunbiyi is the fact that political watchers in the state believe it is the turn of Osun West Senatorial District, being the only zone that has been marginalised since the state was created out of the old Oyo State. When the State was created in 1991, late Sen. Isiaka Adeleke, the Ede born politician from Osun West Senatorial District became the first elected civilian governor. He only spent 22 months as his administration was truncated by military junta. Not only that Ogunbiyi has since embarked on wide consultations around the ward, state, senatorial constituency across the state, he is also putting in place a powerful logistics network. Nothing less than 46 branded cars have been purchased for a smooth movement of his team. That is aside 6 seater buses and Toyota hummer buses.
At 56, Dr. Akinade Ogunbiyi has achieved so much and he is still striving hard for excellence. He is an innovative leader and well- grounded scholar who identifies opportunities and creates great and highly beneficial values from them through entrepreneurship. He has PHD in Insurance and Risk Management (Hons) and has accumulated over the years, unique skills and capabilities through his insatiable search for knowledge.
He graduated in 1986 with a Second Class Upper division in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ife, Nigeria (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife). He has an Executive Master’s Degree from the University of Nevarra, Barcelona, Spain; Global Executive Leadership Certificate from Yale School of Management; Certified High Potential Leader Education from Harvard Business School and a Graduate Advanced Management Leadership Course from Said Business School, University of Oxford.
Akin is an Associate Member of the Chartered Insurance Institute of the London and a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (FCIIN). He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Directors (FIoD); Fellow West Africa Insurance Institute, Banjul, Gambia and also a Fellow of the Risk Managers Society of Nigeria (RIMSON).
His career development in Insurance started during his undergraduate studies when he ventured into Agricultural Insurance as his choice of specialization. Soon after graduation, Dr. Ogunbiyi was employed in 1988 by the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON PLC) as a Research & Planning Officer. He worked in various strategic capacities within the Corporation, including the training of chief executives of Insurance Companies from sister African countries.
In his entrepreneurial pursuits, he has taken quite some risks. He gave up an impressive and promising career at NICON to go into Insurance Consultancy– a business hitherto unexplored and without a precedent of success in Nigeria. Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi was the pioneer Chief Executive of Finance & Insurance Expert Limited, a firm of Finance, Insurance, Environmental and Management Consultants as Managing Partner/Chief Executive Officer in 1992.
A resilient business manager, he has continued to create wealth for the nation through the establishment of many viable and well-managed businesses. He is currently the Group Chairman of Mutual Benefits Group- a conglomerate with 9 subsidiaries and over 5,000 employees, who are gainfully employed in various value-adding sectors of the Nigerian and other nations economies. Akin is the Chairman of the USIG, a real estate investment firm and Charles Enterprises LLC; both in the USA, and CIL (Inc) UK.
A philanthropist and God-fearing technocrat, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi is presently promoting the establishment of a private University under the Arubiewe Educational Foundation. The Foundation has supported over a hundred scholarship awards and sponsorship of students in secondary, tertiary professional education.
He sits on the boards of many companies both in Nigeria and other countries.
He founded and nurtured Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc, a Nigerian company into an enhanced private-sector initiative with full-fledged affiliate companies in Niger Republic and Liberia.
He integrated and successfully transformed the coordinate business units into highly profitable business ventures in Insurance, Oil and Gas, Agriculture, Transportation logistics, Real Estate, Banking, and Mining.
Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi pioneered grass-root insurance with its tailor-made offerings as catalyst for revenue gains, growth and expansion in the economies of catchment countries.
