Arsene Wenger looked to have gotten his pound of flesh from Jose Mourinho as Arsenal secured a 2-0 win over their fierce rivals, Manchester United, and thus ended the unbeaten run of the Red Devils which had stretched to 25 games going into Sunday’s game.
Granit Xhaka’s deflected effort sent Arsenal ahead in the 54th minute before Danny Welbeck doubled it three minutes later as Arsene Wenger finally overcame a Jose Mourinho team in the Premier League.
The result has now left Man United, who have lost for the first time in the league since October, four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City on the same number of matches, and Arsenal will now go above Mourinho’s team if they win their game in hand.
Next up for Arsenal is a trip to Southampton on Wednesday night, while Man United will welcome Celta Vigo to Old Trafford on Thursday for the second leg of their Europa League semi-final, holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg in Spain.
Both sides do not look good enough to make top four this season hence forfeiting their chances of participating in Europe’s top-flight club football next season but a Manchester United can turn the fortunes around should they win the Europa league this season.
