On February 3rd,1993,Nigeria’s yet-to-be-declared winner of the country’s June 12,1993 Presidential Election, the late Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola,GCFR,popularly known as MKO,visited Ibadan, capital of Oyo State of Nigeria,on a campaign rally to the state.
In my capacity as the Secretary-General of the MKO Abiola Dynamic Group,a support group consisting relations, friends and well-wishers of MKO,I coordinated the campaign visit.
Abiola, eventually won the presidential election with unprecedented massive votes cutting across tribal, religious and class borders, but the self-styled President Ibrahim Babangida-led Federal Military Government unfairly annuled Nigeria’s freest and fairest election, without any given reason or reasons.
As they say,if lies travel for twenty years, truth will overtake them in just a day.
So is it for the now retired Army General Babangida and his fellow nihilists,as the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government is righting the evil wrongs and self-serving deeds of the defunct Babangida military junta.
Yielding to the longtime demands of democrats in Nigeria and abroad,President Buhari,GCFR,on Wednesday,6th June,2018,graciously approved that June 12,rather than the former baseless May 29,become Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
On Wednesday, June 12, this year, the first official anniversary of Democracy Day, President Buhari, again, demonstrated his administration’s respect for equity,by naming the National Stadium,Abuja after Bashorun Abiola.Long live Nigeria.
As Nigerians and the rest of the world wait patiently for the Federal Government to complete the correction of Babangida’s unfair deeds,we thank President Buhari for listening to the voices of reason and taking corrective actions.May God continue to bless him.Amen.
Also,on the first authentic Democracy Day,Wednesday,June 12,2019,as usual, since 1994,my humble self convened the Annual June 12 Lecture/Luncheon at Omo Ajorosun Club,Agodi,Ibadan,Oyo State. The two guest speakers at the well-attended ceremony were Professor Matthew Umukoro of the Theatre Arts Department of the University of Ibadan and influential newspaper columnist and lawyer,Dr Festus Adedayo.
