Lately, there has been immense pressure on Zacch Adedeji to contest the Oyo State governorship election in 2027.
Adedeji, a reputable accountant and tax expert, is the Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS).
Of course, the Iwo-Ate-born Adedeji had in the past shown interest in the number seat of the state but this time around the clamour for him to join the race is coming from different groups. Many coalitions including market and political groups have pledged their readiness to rally supports for Adedeji.
Just a few weeks ago a coalition of political lovers staged a kind of solidarity rally, signaling their preparedness for Adedeji’s guber project.
The group, operating under the aegis of the Oyo Stakeholders Forum (OSF), not only endorsed Adedeji’s candidacy but also promised make the dream come true.
Dr. Adedeji according to the group has all it takes to drive Oyo State to a higher level with expertise and experience as a tax guru.
The coalition, speaking through it’s leader, Elder Jelili Akande, described Adedeji as the perfect candidate that Oyo State needs at this point. “Dr. Adedeji’s tenure as FIRS Chairman has been marked by innovation, transparency, and a focus on results. Under his stewardship, Nigeria’s tax administration system has undergone unprecedented reforms, leveraging technology to streamline processes, increase compliance, and boost revenue generation. The OSF believes these achievements serve as a blueprint for transforming Oyo State into a model of economic self-reliance.” The group noted that the state needs a visionary leader who understands how to create wealth and ensure its equitable distribution.
“Dr. Adedeji has demonstrated this capability at the federal level, and we are confident he can replicate this success in our state,” a representative of the coalition stated. The group has also made a passionate appeal to all residents of Oyo State to commerce the project in earnest in other to rally supports for Adedeji.
Dr. Zacch Adedeji was born some 56 years ago in Iwo-Ate, a town near Ogbomoso in Oyo State. He earned a National Diploma in Accountancy from the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State. He also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Management & Accounting at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, where he graduated with a First-Class honor. Adedeji is also a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in the United States, where he completed an Executive Course in Economic Development. He’s a Doctor of Philosophy in Accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
Adedeji’s career began with a managerial position at the multinational corporation Procter and Gamble (P&G). He held different roles at P&G, including Corporate Finance Manager (West Africa) and Finance Leader for SAP Implementation Project. He was appointed as the Commissioner for Finance, Oyo State by the late former Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi from 2011 to 2015.
During his tenure as commissioner, he implemented significant financial reforms, including the establishment of the Treasury Single Account (TSA), which streamlined government revenues and expenditures.
Adedeji was appointed as the Executive Secretary of National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) during the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. He established the Nigeria Sugar Institute and extending the Sugar Backward Integration Program. He’s presently the Executive Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the agency saddled with the responsibility of assessing, collecting, and accounting for taxes accruing to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Prior to his appointment as Executive Chairman of FIRS, Dr. Adedeji also served as Special Adviser to the President on Revenue.
He’s a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State.
