Remo Secondary School, Sagamu is one of the oldest schools in Nigeria. It is also one school that has produced very many prominent Nigerians who are doing so well in their chosen fields of endeavour.
It is one school that has produced the likes of Sir Kensington Adebukunola Adebutu, the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Victor Ajayi, Otunba Olayinka Lawal-Solarin a distinguished Pharmacist. It is the school that produced the likes of ADRON GMD, Aare Adetola EmmanuelKing, Chief Adewale Ayuba. Prof. Gabriel Ogunmola, Chancellor of Lead City University, Prof. Olukayode Adebisi Dada, a Professor of Chemical Pathology and former Director of Directorate, Advancement of Research & Linkages, OOU, Ago-Iwoye.
There are others like Mr. Ebun Awobokun who was the first Senior Boy, Mrs. Bose Awobokun, who was the 2nd Senior Girl, Chief Ibikunle Oladeinde, Chief M. Ade Soneye, Mr. Oludayo Sonuga, Mr. Adewale Solarin, Mr. David Ogunsanwo, Prof. (Chief) Olubi Sodipo (for V.C. OOO, Ago Iwoye, Mr. Adeoye Opeewe (first 2nd Vice Principal of the Old Students Associate, Mr. Tunde Agbaje, late Chief Segun Olusola, Mrs. Dupe Awomolo, Dr. Sola Soile (formerly of OAU, Ile-Ife), Mr. Bola Onimole, Mr. Ariyo Adebayo, Mr. Tola Mobolurin, (the stakebroker) Engr. Dapo Onaeke, Otunba Famuboni, Hon. Justice Mobolaji Ojo, Mrs. Folasade Adeyanju, Olumide Oredeko, Dr. A. A. Ogunnowo, Mr. Niyi Famoriyo, Mr. Morufu Adesina, Mr. Tunde Sowole, Hon. Adeyiga Awoyemi, and Miss Olayinka Abolanle.
There are others like Prof. Doris Helen Afejuku, Wale Fayemi, a top shot in Total, Wole Sodipe, a Chartered Accountant, Olumide Falano (who works in New Zealand), Prince Kunle Sonariwo (an Architect), Fola Sotubo (MD A-Z Healthcare Group of Companies in the UK), Mrs. Selimot Olapeju Ottun ( a Perm Sec in Ogun State), Oladipupo Adetola Oluwole (an Anesthesiologist and Intensivist.
Many don’t know Mr. Ola Oresanya is also an old student. He is a recognised authority in Waste Management and Environmental Development in Africa. He was MD of LAWMA in Lagos State. So also, Sir Engr. Gbolahan Oladapo Onaeko, a Civil Engineer, Prof. Tunde Ogunsanwo (a top shot at OOU, Ago-Iwoye. Do you know that Princess Iyabo Orebowale Yusuf, the retired Ogun State Head of Service is an old student? Yes, she is. There are others like Rear Admiral Adetoye Oyetola Sode (rtd), Aremo Taiwo Allimi AND Otunba Felix Ashaye. R.S.S is also the school that the City People Publisher, Seye Kehinde attended. He was the Head Boy during his set.
The school turned 75 on 4th February 2021. When the school turned 70 in 2016 there was a week long 70th anniversary of the school which started on Sunday 31st of January 2016. Lets tell you more.
Remo Secondary School, Sagamu was founded as the first co-educational secondary school from inception in Nigeria and West Africa. The old students the School celebrated the 70th Anniversary not to only to relieve their time in the school but to let it serve as an opportunity to express gratitude to the founders who thought it fit to establish what many thought then, was impossible. Like the Akarigbo of Remoland Oba Tunde Ajayi, who is also an old student revealed then, that the school has turned Boys and Girls into great men and women and produced eminent Nigerian Lawyers, Doctors, Pharmacists, Engineers, Accountants, Architects, Surveyors, top Civil Servants, University Professors and Administrators, Broadcasters, Journalists, Playwrights, Principals of Post-Primary institutions Businessmen and Industrialists holding many strategic positions in Government and the Private Sector. They have contributed and continue to contribute to the socio economic development and transformation of Nigeria. In 2016, he was the National President of the Old Students Association.
When RSS turned 70, the old students under the leadership of Oba Ajayi decided to tackle the issue of infrastructural decay, due to inadequate funding, “We are well aware that Government is unable to fund educational institutions sufficiently. It is in realization of this that Governments at various levels have encouraged Corporate bodies, Philanthropists and NGOs and Alumni Associations to join hands in addressing the obvious shortfall in funding. The Old Students of Remo Secondary School Sagamu have shown courage and determination in addressing this gap.”
“The school is proud of its old students and therefore expects all old students to be in the forefront of this noble cause. RSS needs more to function due to its age and population of students. The school requires funds to create a more conducive learning environment.
The alumni of Remo Secondary School raised funds to undertake developments in the following areas amongst others:
(i) Curbing erosion in the school and construction of drainages (ii) Renovation of science Laboratories in the upper and junior schools (iii) Renovation of the staff rooms and provision of toilets (iv) Provision of chairs and tables in the classrooms (v) Renovation of the school hall and provision of chairs (vi) Replacement ofroofing sheets in classrooms (vii) Building of a new kitchen for the school (viii) Painting of the school (ix) Screen digging and tiling of floors of classrooms. (x) Acquisition of a new school bus (xi) Refurbishment of existing buses (xii) Public address systems (xiii) Lighting facilities, bulbs and fans (xiv) Acquisition of projectors, white boards (xv) Renovation of Classroom blocks (xvi) Functional water facility to serve the laboratories and toilets (xvii) Overhaul of the ICT department (xviii) Construction of additional classrooms (xix) Upgrading and renovation of school library (xx) Construction of additional staff quarters (xxi) Renovation and upgrading of hostels.
The projects listed below were commissioned during the 70th anniversary week, (from 31st January to 6th of February 2016). They are
64/68 Set: A well built 3 bedroom flat for staff. 68/72 Construction of borehole linking the laboratory, Library and the toilets. 73/78 Set Renovation and fully equipping the home economics laboratory. 73/78 Set Resurfacing of the school entrance roads. 74/79 Set Renovation of 2 classrooms. 77/78 Set Renovation of 6 classrooms and 3 offices. 77/78 Set Renovation of administrative block. 86/91 Set Renovation of school clinic. 91/95 Set Renovation of the school library.
A number of projects are still being constructed and there have been commitments from old students to undertake projects in various areas. Mention must be made of the sterling quality and priceless contributions of the Old Students’ Association of the school under the focused, courageous and charismatic leadership of Barr. Tunde Ajayi FCA. They have been wonderful. The school is not only blessed with successful and distinguished Old Students but more pleasingly with those who are very fond of the school and who consider no sacrifice too great to offer for the sustenance and enhancement of the enviable standard hitherto achieved by the school.
At the 60th REUNION of the OLD STUDENTS in October 2013 the multi-million Naira National Secretariat was commissioned and two (2) 2 bedroom staff quarters were donated to the school. More than six million (N6m) have been invested for refurbishment and repairs of dilapidated structures and infrastructures in the school. They include the following: Total renovation of the laboratories with furniture, gas and water • Re-roofing and refurbishment of the dining hall • Equipping the new Home Management Laboratory with necessary equipment, utensils and other materials • Upgrading the sporting facilities in the school and purchase of sporting equipment and materials • Water supply and • Refurbishment of school bus.
