A Lagos-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) Rising Stars Humanitarian Foundation will hold a six-day empowerment workshop for 100 teenagers in alternative care homes across Lagos state between the ages of 13-17 at the SOS children’s village Isolo Lagos.
The workshop is targeted at special children, who are residents in alternative care homes in Lagos state, according to the coordinator of the programme Modupe Egbenoma, the training is scheduled to hold on August 1st-6th 2022 (a week-long program)
Modupe Egbenoma, who is running the foundation which is focused on education, talent discovery, skills empowerment, mental development, the building of culture and excellence in the mindset of the future leaders, said experts would impact the children and their caregivers with various skills and know-how that would undoubtedly, add value to their lives and help them escape vulnerability, lead exceptional lives and serve their generation better. The one-week training program would deposit in the children entrepreneurship education, financial literacy, and mastery of vocational skills amongst other value-creating knowledge that would turn the beneficiaries into producers and employers of labour
On the last day of the workshop, participants would be given golden opportunities to display the crafts and products that they produced as evidence and practical result of the knowledge they have learnt in the past days. The organizer of the programme, Modupe Egbenoma who is the executive director of the foundation, stated that the beneficiaries of the programme would be given start-up kits to ensure they continue to practice the skills and education.
Modupe Egbenoma, who is also an actress and a plus-size model remarked that there was no better way of empowering the children as this project will give ample room for the teenagers to create and co-create. Which will project their creativity, innovation and collaboration.
Modupe Egbenoma, who is also into catering services, noted that the skills-acquiring scheme is a sure way of boosting the confidence of the children as creativity will be used to find an innovative approach to difficult problems.
Modupe Egbenoma, who is popularly called Dupe Noma, studied political science and public administration at Delta State University, Abraka, she told City People that the idea to run an NGO came to her in a dream about 10 years ago when she celebrated her birthday on April 16, 2012, at the SOS children’s village Isolo, Lagos.
She recalled that in the dream, she saw herself discovering, nurturing and projecting talented children in orphanage homes.
